Amateur Athletes Getting Paid

by Gary Tenner
(Anaheim, CA)

I think the colleges are seeing way too many kids get too close to the money. I would like to see better policies in place for keeping the kids away from the money hungry agents who can ruin and players eligibility along with the College athletic program.

I do not believe the universities are taking advantage of the students as they have to provide the facilities and coaches and continue to show that their offering is competitive to promote the athletic program.

The money is real and it isn't going away so I say do not pay the amateur athletes and keep the sport clean.

I welcome your thoughts

Athletes and Pay for Play In College
by: Winton, Seattle

The money is so big now that it's hard to ignore that the big schools re pooling a ton of money into Non Sports areas. This is fantastic for Research and Development.

In today's society where the NBA is now in the Olympics, apologies to the Jim Thorpe family, we should reconsider the College Level status for pay. Why not? At least take some of this money and apply it to:

Allowance
Insurance against injury
Graduate School Set Aside (ok ok)

The money is too big now to ignore their social impact.

USC and Reggie Bush
by: Clarke in Los Angeles

When is a school like USC not liable? How can a school be completly held responsible for the actions of their student athletes? A sure fire way to lesson the thirst for all this is to NOT allow the professional sports to hire anyone under the age of 21. Yes, I know we live in the land of the free and home of the brave but this is now out of hand.

If anyone thinks there beloved alma mater is clean they are not looking in the right places. Every Division 1&2 school has a problem at some level when it comes to athletes and their pursuit of the almighty dollar.

We need legislation to STOP this madness and harness the pro's from creating this easy street view of the fake world they live in. Sports are games. They are over priced athletes who bring in way too much money to further promote stuff we don't need. Sports are fun don't get me wrong. But USC stands to lose big time if this ongoing investigation by YAHOO (no one else seems to care or have insider information apparently). If they were knowledgable of all this and failed to disclose the information then shame on the institution and all should suffer. Sorry future sports fans but thats how I feel.

Now on the other hand, perhaps the NCAA shouldn't care. In fact, why do they? So what if an athlete is paid. If the NCAA is truly Student Athlete and not Athlete Student then as long as the individual maintains a 2.0 GPA who the heck cares if they are paid?

Thats the fix in my opinion. Grades keep them in games and ultimately on the team. Go get your 100's of dollars for doing nothing. But fail to maintain your academic standards and bye bye.

Amateur Athelete Status
by: Glenn in Tucson

This is probably the worst state of affairs the NCAA has ever been in. I agree with the other posts here that the poison is down into the high school level and it isn't coming out any time soon.

The boosters are so powerful in most big time high schools (not too mention the private schools where it's ok to buy championships). The thought of placing the word Academics anywhere near the word Athletics makes my stomach turn.

Here's a good one, every year the high schools have back to school night. When they hand the microphone over to the athletic director he or she always starts their topics with Student Athlete. What a farse. They accept a student with D's and F's as long as their overall GPA is at least a 2.0 the kid plays. The school wins. The coach gets his or her trophy. If the kid gets hurt oh well, game over for them. Oh ya, and they have no clue how to handle the Academic side of the equation because they didn't have to prior to the injury. What about those kids?

Last on my list is these offiste testing of players that are marginal. I found out that the athletes have to take a test with a proctor in a room to monitor their effort. In many cases the Proctor was the Head Football Coach!!!! If that doesn't beat all!

Im done. Sorry for ranting but Sutdent Athlete as a title bugs the daylights out of me.
