Balanced Food Groups

by Greg
(St. Louis)

Totally agree with the down sizing of the plates. What a great idea. In Europe this is not even an issue. I can recall complaints on a recent trip where we though the owners were gauging us on the cost of a dinner for the portions received. When in reality we were fine with the meal. It tasted good and had something from all the food groups reccomended by the FDA. It was the portions that were key I believe to satisfying sustaining meal and not wanting more food one hour later!

Get the plates down sized. Portion your meals properly and drink the water. Wish I had thought of it!

Downsizing The Plates!
by: Alicia in Memphis

Well we did it. We donated our Large dinnerware to our local charity and went to Macy's department store and bought a downsized set of dinnerware. Although the price put us through the roof we answered back with our Health.

Our first night of using the plates was awesome. We finished our meal with a satisfied tummy and have left overs for the next 2 nights! Nice bi-product of the plates being smaller at a time when stretching every dollar spent is critical.

Alicia...now if we could just find Elvis.

Toss the plates
by: Arlene in Boston

We should toss our plates and donate them to charity. Get back to basics folks and reduce the plate size. This will slowly but surely reduce the waste line as well.

Exercise after every meal. Walk inside your house. Buy a pedometer and put that coach to work he doesn't get tired ever!

If we reduced our Over Sized Plates by 2 inches in diameter it will reflect in weeks our waste line measurements.

Do it now do it for life.

Plate Size matters
by: Deanna, West Virginia

We started downsizing our servings to our kids this past summer. But the plates were still big. Traditional china I guess. It wasn't working because we couldn't visualize the real problem and the plates looked empty.

Then we had our garage sale. Dumped the old plates and went to a smaller size. Not only are we now eating healthier (Super Foods) but we feel just fine without eating the portions of the larger plates.

Caution to all. It doesn't work right away! Surprise! You have to dig in and keep everyone from going for seconds.

We fought this every night with the boys but now they are just fine. Results you ask? We all look better (not great) but better. We are all happy about our eating habits and we have not substituted the new portions per meal with in between snacking!

Food Portions
by: Allison in New Hampshire

I have found that the plate size is an incredible influence to food portions. It's so natural to fill a plate so to speak and you don't even realize it. Greg, your message is so true when you go out to dinner the first comment is the first visual and when that portion is "tiny" a comment flies out over priced and under nurished.

What if the establishments actually went the other way!!!! Promote small portions. They would need less inventory and we would walk out of their building with a smile and less baggage to burn off in the form of calories!

I am in search of Smaller Plates myself. First step is to take order in one's own home. Our plates are so big that we just fill them up.

It's worth the expense to donate the old and replace with the new and downsize the physical plate sizes. Works wonders!

Supersized Meals
by: Cassie

Greg, I think this all tracks back to the media and marketing guru's who believe that to sell something it has to be BIG. It has to stand out. Diet programs are at odds with the marketing pro's as they want us to go with smaller portions and all you hear from the retail chains is Supersize for fifty cents more!

We are in the process of selling all our china and going with mid sized plates as that is a great first step. Of course, you still have to adjust the menu and we are doing that as well. We are going by the "rainbow" diet. Making sure we have all the colors of the rainbow met in our meals. We end our day with making sure we have done at least 10,000 steps too. This is a great way to incorporate all the elements and go on auto diet pilot. Doctor Oz on Oprah has been a great inspiration to our family.

Balance and Portions
by: Arlene Taylor

Great tips. I love this feature that Planet Berry has added. We struggled with our kids for years on portions and balance. Seemed to be seasonally challenging with Summer versus the other seasons

We just did this
by: Karen Tathe

Greg,

I can't believe you wrote this. We just did this with our family and although it's a bit early to claim victory we are seeing signs of improvelemnt with weight change in the right direction! I will say this regarding the water drinking. Be very careful with children. If they fill up on too much water they may not eat the nutritional part of the meal due to the sensation of feeling so full. The portions we are in lock step! Down sizing of the plates you bet.

We keep thinking that someone will launch a new plate business totally focused on smaller portions and the impact psychologically!
