CHILD LABOUR IN THE 19TH CENTURY

by PELUMI AROGZ
(LONDON)

CHILDREN WORKING HARD

CHILDREN WORKING HARD

IN THIS PROJECT, I AM GOING TO INVESTIGATE HOW CHILDREN WERE TREATED I THE PAST BEFORE I PROCEED,I WILL LIKE TO DEFINE THE WORD 'CHILD LABOUR'.
CHILD LABOUR REFERS TO THE EMPLOYMENT OF CHILDREN AT REGULAR AND SUSTAINABLE LABOUR.CHILDREN DID JOBS LIKE; MINING,FACTORY WORK,PROSTITUTION,QUARRYING,AGRICULTURE AND DOING SOME ODD JOBS.
SOME CHILDREN WERE FORCED TO DO TEDIOUS AND REPETITVE
JOBS SUCH AS;ASSEMLING BOXES AND POLISHING SHOES.WORK-
ING CONDITIONS VARIED IN DIFFERENT AREAS OF WORK. SMALL
CHILDREN WOULD WORK AS SHOP KEEPERS.
IN MARCH 1832,A MAN CALLED MICHAEL SADLER INTRODUCED A
BILL INTO PARLIAMENT THAT PROPOSED LIMITING THE WORKING
HOURS OF ALL PEOPLE UDER THE AGE 18 SHOULD BE 10 HOURS A DAY.
MANY FACTORY OWNERS AND MANAGERS KEPT THEIR WORKERS WORKING FOR AS LONG AS THEY WANTED THEM TO FROM 5AM TO 9PM FOR EXAMPLE.
THE TROUBLE WAS THAT IN SOME FACTORIES,WORKERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO WEAR WATCHES,SO IF THEY WERE LATE FOR WORK,THEY WERE PUNISHED,PERHAPS BEATING OR HAD MONEY DEDUCTED FROM THIER WAGES.
THIER LIVING CONDITIONS WERE REALLY BAD. FAMINE WAS THE MOST POPULAR NATURAL DISASTER AND PEOPLE DIE OF FOOD.
THOUSANDS OF LITTLE CHILDREN,BOTH AMLE AND FEMALE THAT WERE AGED 7 TO 14 YEARS ARE FORCED DAILY TO LABOUR
FROM 6AM TO 11PM WITH ONLY 5 MINUTES LUNCH AND RECREATION.
IT WAS NOT JUST CHILD LABOUR IN FACTORIES AND MINES THAT CAUSED CONCERN,MANY PEOPLE BELIEVED THAT A WOMAN'S
LACE WAS IN THE HOME LOOKING AFTER HER HUSBAND AND CHILDREN,BY WORKING SHE WAS SEEN TO BE DEPRIVING A MAN OF JOB.

Families torn apart.
by: nandy42

My parents are now both dead. My mother had 6 children with her first husband, but when he died her oldest four boys were taken away from her and sent to Canada. Then she had 3 more children with our father. Currently we are trying to oganise a reunion. The youngest is now 68 and the oldest is 80. One of my brothers I only met once, The rest of them just a few times. But when these children were taken away from there Mother, I don't believe they knew where they were going and why they weren't staying at home. I don't believe that the do gooders who "had the welfare of these children at their hearts, even had a heart. And did anyone imagine who was going to be there to comfort them we they needed it.And I don't believe family life existed. I feel very bitter that I mised out on a life with 6 brothers and 2 sisters because of some DO GOODERS.

Children and Third World Labor Laws
by: Tomas

Where is the world looking when we keep hearing about the below poverty levels of third world countries and their abuse of children? We look the other way. Why, because if we get involved the big corporations who are benefiting from the child labor will close their Plants just like Starkist Tuna did in the past with the islands of the pacific.

So if we flag these corporations and thus governments they (the companies) will just pull the plant and then the people are left with unemployment which is far worse then the low pay scales.

No end in sight for this one. Sadly.

Labor Abuse
by: Nancy Patterson

Labor laws are so wrong when it comes to children in many countries. Woman have come a long way but our children of the world are still not as protected as they should be. Yes we have made great strides but look to Africa and the Islands of the Pacific in some cases and you will see what I am refering to.
