College and Money Management

by Victor
(San Diego, CA)

One thing I believe the universities need to do a better job on is money management. Yes there were several meetings on Financial Aide but Im talking about the weekly cash flow management. These are 18 year olds that do not have all the knowledge and maturity in most cases to handle being away from home for nine months and managing their cash. Most of them have been brought up on demand cash meaning if they wanted somthing the cash was demanded and the bank just paid. Bank of Parents that is.

Sometimes I yearn for the times when I thought I had taught all the right lessons to my kids from how I was brought up but alas I feel like we failed as our kids are struggling with materlistic needs and desires without the desire to earn the money to buy the "stuff".

Oh well, this is great therapy, thanks for listening.

Why go to a Private College
by: Jefferson

For the life of me I cannot understand why anyone with a high school degree would throw away 100,000 for the first two years of General Education. Yes, folks, lets face it. The presitgous hallow campus of Harvard is just like any other school for the first two years. Unless you are truly specializing in medicine as an example you will most likely be paying about 50,000 per year plus books and perhaps food if you need that to survive.

But every state has some type of Junior College system. California leads the way in affordable vision for a family to offer their children a path to higher learning. Wake up folkds. Unless your child has a sponsor or can slam dunk you might want to reconsider the first two years.

Money Management Class
by: Gloria in Sacramento

Where are the college thinkers going when a child enters the university level and NO intro to money management and planning exists.

It should be mandatory reading and a one unit class at minimum. As they enter Orientation (most colleges have this) they should be asked to take a short class on the effectiveness of planning and understanding the balance of money management over the course of a four or five year period while on campus.

This would further enlist our future leaders of America and elsewhere to better understand the value of time management and their own personal money supplies. What are the impacts of a rising dollar or as we see today a falling dollar?

Where should they invest and how should they manage their food money and personal needs? When these kids leave High School they have no clue.

How about it University Presidents? Step up and make this mandatory study!

College Funding
by: Jeff in Nebraska

I too am confused. The legal jargon drive me nuts and then the pressure of getting it all done and the semestar starts and the letters that your tution has not been paid and yet they have the money in their account (University) but not to worry! My child has enough stress without having to deal with the inability of a University and a Bank to work the network and systems out in time. What a mess.

College Tuition
by: Justin Skinner

This triggered my brain back on the past six months. I have a child in college now and we spent countless hours working to understand all the finance options available. Then we chose to go witth the Universities suggestions they offered and now we are lost trying to figure out just what the heck happened. My child has their lown package and now we a parents have a loan package. All are non-subsidised so that means we pay 100% from day one on the interest! If only this was easier to digest.
