College Basketball Freshman

by Thomas Welden
(Baltimore, MD)

I just watched one of the best championship NCAA games of all time. Kansas vs. Memphis. Too great schools. One great game. Overtime and Kansas takes home the trophy.

But, this comment is about the buzz on Freshman going Pro. How sad is that to think that a Freshman can leave a school after one year and enter the Pro's. Would General Electric or IBM hire kids at the age of 18 to be Vice Presidents? I know, VP's don't make what Rookies do in the NBA. So, perhaps we are talking CEO level right out of High School. Any takers?

That's what it amounts to. We take a child who is becoming and adult and hand him or her Millions. Then his "family" takes their cut and don't forget the Agent's 33 percent. Then the injury. Uh oh, no friends left?

When will Pro Sports put their foot down and stand up to the pressure and place a minimum age on Rookies! It's time. These kids need to be 21 or older to make the mental leap into the Pro Sports. Physically some can adjust, most struggle there as well.

I vote for a minimum age.

Athletes Lose Out
by: Carrie

When these young athletes go pro in the womb of High School we can only blame ourselves. We create the environment and acceptance of kids bypassing college for the Pros. It is each and everyone of us that must answer to this problem.

The media feeds off of us. If we shut down and stop buying the hype and the ads it will stop the media from selling the topic of youth professional paths.

These kids leave high school with agents pounding their chests and parents proudly sitting behind a podium basking in the soon to be lime light of their child star.

But just like we have seen in Hollywood with child actors we see it as well with the High School Athlete going pro. All too often it ends sadly with the money gone from the very person who should have it for the rest of their lives. Greedy agents. Greedy parents and relatives all with their hands out.

Few and far between are the Good Stories with the great endings....even Kobe had his Colorado...

Academics versus Pro's
by: Jonathan, San Diego

This is now in an epidemic slide for the Universities. If I were the Dean of Admissions I woould think real hard about that 4 year free ride to a high school kid who is sporting gold jewelery unbefitting a child.

We all see it. Look at this kid from Ohio who told the world "he" chose USC (OJ Mayo). He also told the world he was only going there for one year.

He had all sorts of baggage around him that smelled of certain problems. The school knew it too. But they turned their cheek for one year of fame and fortune which they got. They also may have an NCAA investigation to add to their Football programs 2 year headache that won't go away from the Reggie Bush era.

I say, the fix is the Pro's. They need to have a plus 21 age bracket entry requirement. Im sure the powers to be will suit them like crazy but the benefit is there if we hold our ground. No 21 no Play Pro.....
