AS a 44 year old woman I have very little if any allergies. An occasional seasonal allergy and that's about it. I bought the Acai berry juice thinking I was doing something healthy for myself and wow was I wrong. After a couple of hours I began to break out in hives on my torso and later it moved to my arms, legs and face. The itching was madening. On the second day my lips, ears and nose began to swell. I took benadryl but it did not help. I went to the Dr. and received a Kenalog shot that was suposed to help within a couple of hours ---NOT. On the third day my lips were still swelling but the hives were beginning to subside. It took a total of 4 days to recover after 6 oz of the juice. I somehow don't think this is for me. I hope others explore the possible reactions before blindly consuming something so new.

Itching from Acai by: Anonymous
I have no known allergies so I am surprised to find I have had a reaction to Acai. I have taken the high strength capsules for four days and have a rash on my wrists and ankles. It is driving me crazy, I won't be taking anymore thanks to this site.

Severe allergic reactio to acai? by: Janice
I have food allergies to carrots and celery and know a full blown anaphylactic attack when I have one. I just had my first encounter with acai berries and spirulina at a breakfast restaurant in Kona , Hawaii. Immediately my stomach began to ache and 20 minutes later I had swollen hands, feet , eyes, itching and violent vomiting and diarrhea . I wondered if it possibly was the acai berry or spirulina. After reading your posts I am confident acai is something I should avoid and will add it to my list of things not to ingest.

allergic to Xocia Chocolates by: Anonymous
I had a severe reaction to Xocia Chocolates. Broke out with hives all over my arms, legs, and torso. The hives were also in the roof of my mouth, and throat.
Besides being miserable, I was dizzy, and had severe bowl upsets with it.
Was told the acai berry with blueberries were the best antitoxiants out there, and completely safe.
I just believe the whole acai berry use needs to be better monitored for all uses. The current amount people are ingesting for all kinds of health concerns may be very dangerous, if given to the wrong people.

I have been a very allergic person all my life. What made me take Acai,Pomegranate Goji Juice Blend and Green Tea. I will never know, except I was losing weight. I am a mess and have been that way for two weeks. Rash all up and down my arms and lower legs. Swelling and skin looks like an alligator. Feeling awful on one antihistamine in daytime and another at night. Very sun sensitive and live in Florida. I am supposed to model in a Fashion Show next week, ugly. When I eat other Berries (blue Berries or cranberries) get inflamed. They never bothered me before Acai juice.

I tried an acai juice from Costco sometime last year and developed a rash on my neck. So I never tried it again. Last week my mom started taking acai pills and developed a similar rash so she stopped taking the pills and her rash is clearing up. Thank you everyone for your comments. Nice to know we're not alone in our acai allergy.

Lips on fire by: Anonymous
I purchased pure Acai berry liquid (skin, seed, and all) to help increase my energy. It worked wonderfully!
Into my 3rd week of the Acai liquid, I got really sore lips and thought it was from eating too many grape tomatoes one day (they were so good). I continued taking the Acai juice and was so happy with the added energy.
My lips became covered with extremely tiny blisters, swollen, very dry & chapped, and very painful. The blisters turned into a sandpaper-like feeling all over. I couldn't stretch my lips (as to smile) without feeling like they were old elastic that breaks as it is stretched, and that hurt so much. It is a weird thing to have one's lips cause so much pain.
I did not make the connection to the Acai causing this issue at first. I ran out of the liquid, and my lips healed. I still thought it was from the acid in the tomatoes. I bought another bottle, and when it happened all over again, it dawned on me that I was probably allergic.
This time, all of the same symptoms were back but my lips were worse and cracked in the corners. Both times, I tried lip balm after lip balm - many that I have used before successfully - but they turned gummy-like on my lips and did not help.
I stopped taking the Acai juice, found a jojoba oil, almond oil, & vitamin E lip balm that provided relief, and after about 1 week, I'm seeing and feeling improvement.
I can't wait to have my lips back to normal, and I'm upset to lose this energy boosting supplement and to have spent good money on expensive Acai juice I will not use now.

Acai Allergy by: Anonymous
I have allergies to a variety of antibiotics, and to cats. I have a very minor bit of asthma. I have some allergy to raw plums and peaches, but that is the only food allergy I have... until now. I thought I would try some acai and drank about 4 ounces of an acai beverage. Two hours later I was gasping for breath. I thought I was going to die. I would not have survived this other than the fact that the really severe part of the attack was only a minute or so in duration and I was able to suck enough air into my lungs at that point (with great difficulty) that I didn't pass out. Then it eased up. I have never had a problem anywhere near as bad as this was. I thank God that I survived this. This is no joke.

another response by: JJ, RN
I have had few issues with any natural foods esp fruits or vegetables. My first exposure to Acai was in a "vitamin water." I had numerous benign experiences with the other ingredients in the water. I took one swallow from the bottle shortly after leaving home on my way to work. Within five minutes my nose was plugged as if I had a bad cold but I was not sick at all. I experienced some mild nausea which passed and I decided to throw the bottle away. A few weeks later, I had a small bottle of pomegranite and Acai juice. Again there was nothing else in the juice that I had not had before. I took a swallow again on the way to work in the morning. This time, I instantly felt my tissues in my head swell up and I couldn't breathe at all through my nose. There I was breathing through my mouth and I was very nauseated. It takes an hour to get to work and I got worse and worse. I thought about stopping at an urgent care near work. But as I was approaching it, I began to vomit and within a couple of moments I was fine. The inner head swelling immediately went down and I was back to normal after almost an hour of agony - after one swallow of the juice. I will never allow it to knowingly touch my lips again.

ACAI worked for me by: Tammy
I took a juice blend of the Acai Berry and no problems at all. However, my husband took the pill form of the berry and he had a rash. Very strange. Im affraid to take the Pill but given Im not having a problem with the Acai Berry juice I should be ok. There must be something else in this Acai Pill form that is causing my husbands problem. Or perhaps he is allergic to Acai and I am not. Strange little dilema.
On the positive side I am feeling good and have good energy no big rush but a definite improvement with this juice.
I TOOK THE ACAI CAPSULES 1200 MGS FOR A MONTH AND BROKE OUT IN HIVES, MY THROAT IS SORE, RUNNY NOSE, DIARRHEA... AND I'VE STOPPED TAKING THEM 4 DAYS AGO....HOPEFULLY MY SYMPTOMS WILL GO AWAY SOON!

Acai Berry Allergic Reaction by: Wanda
I also had a horrible reaction to the Acai Berry Pills. I took it for 7 days, and begain to itch severly, then blisters surrounded by swollen red areas started to appear on my left leg, and the skin on my leg felt very tight. The swellen finally went down after about a week, but the blisters have turned to dark red soars, which are still painful to touch, and still itch occassionally. I haven't been anywhere out of the ordinary, and the only change in my diet lately was the inclusion of acai berry pills, so I attribte this rash to an allergic reaction to acai berry. I think we should all visit our physicians for confirmation and treatment.

itchy, heart palpitations, sweats by: Anonymous
My bottle Acai capsules, bought organic from a national health food store, worked great for about 10 days. I did feel more energetic, less wanting to snack. Then I started itching from head to toe, sweating for no apparent reason, was very fatigued, have a horrible headache, and was having chest pains. It was very scary. Looking back, I was developing allergic reactions from almost the onset, I thought my sneezing, and my itchy eyes and building headache must be because of seasonal allergies, even though they've never been this bad. I'm off Acai completely. I will not risk trying it again in any form. I feel lucky that I didn't develop the hives everyone else did. I'm very grateful to this site for confirming my symptoms.

Thank God I Found This Article by: Anonymous
I am so thankful I found this site. I literally thought I was going crazy, I purchased acai berry and began taking it twice daily as directed. Now I am what I can only describe as a living hell. I have never in my life had an allergic reaction to anything, but not anymore. I am experiencing intense overall body itching, major heartburn, heart palpitations, hives that started on my torso and now has traveled to legs, arms, back, basically allover.
I hope anyone thinking about trying acai berry finds this site before it is too late. I am two weeks into this madness and wish I had researched the product prior to. I thought I had scabies, body lice, paranoia. You name it I was convinced that was what was causing the problem. The real bummer is that I was actually losing weight and having alot of energy with it. I am taking benadryl, oatmeal baths, calamine lotion. I am keeping my fingers crossed that this all ends soon. I wish the best of luck to anyone dealing with this allergic reaction.

Allergic to Acai, I think by: Anonymous
I'm a 38 year old healthy female, and I never have issues with allergies, food or otherwise, except according to my mother when I was a very small child I was briefly allergic to strawberries. A few weeks ago I suddenly experienced irritated lips that felt chapped, and were a bit swollen and itchy. They even became cracked at the corners. I had recently tried a brand of Acai smoothies (one with strawberries too) about the same time my lips became irritated. It was the only change/new thing in my diet. My skin looks good so I don't think it is anything I am using on it. My lips got better, and then one evening I bought another Acai smoothie after about a week or so of not having one. The next morning my lips were slightly swollen and irritated all over again.
One tip for treatment: The Eucerin Aquaphor ointment healed and soothed my lips better and faster than anything else.

I had an allergic reaction to Acia Juice by: Anonymous
WOW! Am I glad I found this site! Two days ago I was given a sample of the Acai Juice. I was hesitant to try it because I am allergic to certain fruits. But, I wanted the energy that was being promoted with this Acai Juice. I only took one small sip. It tasted horrible and had an after taste of black pepper! Within 15 minutes I was breaking out in a rash! The rash was and still is on my face, ears, chest, breats and stomach! In addition to the rash, I have hives on my face and ears! The are so severe that I feel like I have been burned and have blisters! Who knows maybe they actually are blisters! The entire first night my whole body was itching! I take Zyrtec everyday, plus went through allergy shots for 5 years and still had this reaction! I hope this goes away soon! It hurts! I was considering joining a home based business that promotes the Acai juice but I do not think that I will be joining now. After reading all of these comments, I do not feel that I could sell it to anyone. Thanks to everyone who wrote their comment. Without help from sites like these we would think we were the only ones that things like this are happening to! I am sorry everyone is going through this but glad to know I am not the only one!

I have never before had a food allergy but after taking acai for three days, I noticed a rash on my left arm. I stopped taking it and now, after two weeks, both arms and underarms are swollen and covered with the rash.
Strangely, my daughter, who is hypersensitive to many irritants, takes acai with no ill effects.

I started taking Acai capsules about 4 days ago as part of a weight loss regimen. I also took Bromalne capules. On the fourth day, I woke up with an itchy welt across my neck. I stopped taking both capsules thinking that I must be allergic to them. Not sure which one. Nothing else in my daily routine has changed so it must be one of these. I may need to see the doc tomorrow. Bummed out as I paid quite a bit of money for these capsule....Oh well, I guess there is no magic bullet for loosing weight!

Acai Allergy by: Anonymous
I tried taking Acai capsules and the juice a few days ago. I've had the worst diarrhoea since, along with a spinning head, feeling of floating, sore throat and extreme tiredness. No rashes, thank goodness. I thought I'd caught a bug, so when the first set of symptoms stopped, I tried the capsules again, once again, all the symptoms started after a couple of hours.

Very Good Info by: T Loz
I think this is an important topic. I googled this topic and this thread came up.
There are several Acai berry products out there, and with them are endless streams of people that seem to know all about how awesome it is. They all are very passionate and seem perfectly willing to try and preach to you about its miracle powers ? and the amazing cost to you that it will take to feel better. What isn?t out there is any information about possible side effects. And I find that troubling.
Like many of you, I was having an issue I heard could be helped with one of these blends. Specifically, I was experiencing extreme joint pain in my hands. A friend suggested it by name. I started taking it. No, it wasn?t any huge cost; as a matter of fact I was given a bottle to try it out.
After a few days I broke out in a rash on my feet and ankles. Because I didn?t know the cause, I assumed it was because I had been swimming in a lake. After 4 showers, 2 days later, I still had this rash that would come and go. Only now swelling in the area was involved. Creams didn?t help. It wasn?t a fungus or disease I could have picked up because there were times it was gone. And, I still didn?t think it was the juice blend. I thought it might be any other of the ?bad? things I had been consuming. It had been my son?s birthday that week so I had extra sugar floating around in me. Well, two week passed, the rash and swelling didn?t go away and I realized that the only other change could be is the acai juice.
Now I?ve read some places that sometimes these super blends can react badly to extra sugar in the blood. And that might be the case. I?ve also read that those with fish allergies shouldn?t drink it. I have one. Maybe that is why. The fact is I don?t know what it is doing this. And all I want is information. Just like many people looking for help.
I?d like this page to get more traffic because it wasn?t an easy search for me to find it. I noticed on many boards where these types of questions were brought up, marketers instantly slammed on those having problems as people that were just ?hatin th? juice?. There is plenty of info out there on how great it is. (And honestly, the reason I started to take it ? my joint pain ? has cleared up. So I know it works.) I think that companies need to take more responsibility and post the side effects of their product. Drug companies have to do it. A responsible company that is all about health should do it too.

on two occasions by: Susan
I began with an Acai juice with minimal results and no allergic reaction. Desiring more energy and effective results, I changed to soft gel form of Acai which I've been using for 3 weeks. A couple of weeks ago after taking the supplement, I experienced tingling sensation in my scalp, red blotches and burning sensation on my arms, neck and upper breast area. It felt like a severe hot flash!! It went away after a couple of hours and I did not relate it to the acai since I had been outside in yard. I thought is was contact dermititis of some sort. Yesterday morning on my drive to work, I began experiencing the same sensations beginning in my scalp...same symptoms as before only intensified with sensation of itchy throat, minimal wheeszing. I work with nurses, so, a nurse checked me over. I hydrated with water and the symptoms subsided after a couple of hours. I was fatigued the remainder of the day. Needless to say, I will not use Acai again.

Anyone know how long this will last? by: Catherine
I have no food allergies, and no allergies whatsoever, I had hay fever when I was a kid. I took an acai capsule (powder capsule) for two days at the beginning of this week and have a major itchy rash on my arms and legs. Its sooo uncomfortable. I am also incredibly fatigued. I took the capsule in an effort to boost my energy as I'm a mother to a 3 and 1 year old and always on the go. Boy, did that plan backfire! I feel like an idiot. I don't want to take Benedryl as I'm nursing, so I'm trying to wait this out. Can anyone give me an idea on how long the symptoms may last? I'm desperate.

So needless to say I was unhappy and had to stop taking it. I guess I'm alergic to Acai Berry or something in the ingredients and that I will never know.

Thought It Was the ACAI by: Anonymous
I have been following this thread for four months as there are so many stories out there. I have been drinking an Acai Juice blend for 19 months now. No problems. Then all of the sudden I get a rash that won't go away. Well, my logical mind tells me its something other than the juice because for so many months Im just fine.
So, I keep drinking the juice and try to figure out where this rash is coming from. It won't go away. Then I stopped the juice and within 10 days Im cured. Now Im at a loss.
So I take the bottle into my Doctors office (name withheld) and he points out several ingredients that are in the juice unrelated to the fruit let alone the Acai.
He tests me for these items and low and behold I break out on an ingredient I have never heard of before. Not sure why all of the sudden and then my Doctor mentions that maybe they switched to this recently.
Now what do I do?

SEVERE REACTION TO ACAI CAPSULES by: Anonymous
Took 3 acai capsules in one day...two days later broke out in hives and itchiness all over...went to the hospital, they gave me a kenalog shot...some of the hives went away but two days later they came back with a vengence...went to the dermatologist...they did a biopsy and couldn't tell what it was but gave me kenalog spray, allegra and told me to by zertec...seems to be working so far...the hives are starting to dissipate and most of the rash that was on my stomach and arms have gone...in my second week now and still just taking medicine...everyone is right....this stuff even in the smallest doses will cause a reaction that seems to last for weeks....just praying now it doesn't return!!!! Wish I had found this site before I tried acai....BTW ask your doctor for a kenalog shot or the spray...really seems to help make the redness and itching go away.

Sore Throat and Flu Like Symptoms by: Anonymous
Started taking the Acai product (2-3 oz) and didn't notice any increase in energy. In fact, I felt more tired. Then by the third-fourth day I began to feel very achy through my shoulders and neck. I thought maybe I was just detoxing and increased my dosage to 2-3 oz twice a day. By the sixth day my throat was so sore and I developed a very bad cough. It's not a sinus infection because my nose is not plugged up it's only my throat and chest. I've discontinued the product and began my seach to see if there was anyone else out there with the same symptoms.
While I've not developed a rash it's now the ninth day and I'm starting to feel normal again.

I need to detoxify myself from ACAI by: Anonymous
I have extreme allergies(to nearly every plant life there is on earth. I bought my first bottle of ACAI berry blend and after two weeks I started feeling a bit more energic than before. I was consuming 2 oz per day. I begin to notice right away that I was experiencing quite a bit of stomach cramps and gas!! I Never connected this and the ACAI Berry Drink. Two weeks later, I woke up one morning with a six inch (in diameter) swollen circle of red skin (on my back) that extended to my breast area. I was petrified and needless to say very concerned. After about three days the skin darkened, felt like and looked like a bad burn and within one more day the skin started coming off little by little.. I was devastated! I have gone to two doctors and neither of them have a clue what this is. For some reason I begin to wonder about this ACAI berry drink and decided to see if there was any mentioning of allergic reactions to this on the web and here I found this website. I have since stopped drinking this and will discard it. I think this berry stays in your system much longer that we realize!! I need to find a way to detoxify myself and rid my body of this potent Berry product>

Possible Cause by: Taylor in Canada
I too have been experiencing odd symptoms, allergy-like in nature, and am suspicious as to what is causing it. I have noticed;
- itchy red eyes, puffy
- runny nose
- slight increase in itch (everywhere!)
- dry cough and chest congestion
- dandruff
- heartburn (never really experienced before)
- aches
- sporadic headaches
- increase in systolic blood pressure (149 on avg.)
I have not singled it out as being the Acai berry, but I have been taking it for 2 months now (just a pure Acai extract) over which time these symptoms have been mounting up. I will stop taking this berry to see if my symptoms stop.
This is unfortunate as I am a Cancer survivor, as well as manager of a store that retails nutritional supplements, including the Acai berry I'm taking. I have had quite a few customers say they used this berry to prevent the spread of Cancer throughout their bodies (I would never advocate or suggest neglecting proper treatment or chemotherapy for any type of Cancer)
I agree that Western diets typically would set the body up to reject something of this nature, something our digestive system is not used to.

ON THE BRINK OF BREAKOUT by: Anonymous
I've been drinking a shot of Acai (pure Acai in blended form no additives seed skin and all) for the past week...I was super stoked, quick shot in the morning and I was feeling good!!! But this morning I popped a shot (the only thing out of the norm) and as soon as I got out the shower my palms, and bottoms of feet started itching crazy, then I began getting warm sensations all over my body like I was about to start getting real itchy and breakout in hives. My face started to get some redness around it. I just tried to remain calm and not let it get too intense. After relaxing for about an hour the itchy sensation began to subside...luckily it didn't get bad. Now I'm afraid to drink it, especially after reading these stories of others who were on an Acai regiment for a week before anything happened to them. I really hope it was the Acai because other than the itchiness that little berry was making me feel good, super bummed I have to give it up.

Nasty rash and intense itch from Acai powder by: Anonymous
I cannot believe what I am reading here. I started Acai powder 3 months ago. Last month I ran out and purchased my second container. It tasted a bit different and I didn't like it so I rang the distributor and he told me to throw it out and he would supply a larger container at no cost and seemed very apologetic. It arrived and the taste was different yet again. I took it sporadically for one week then decided to forget the whole thing.
2 days later...I thought I must have been bitten by a spider or something in the garden...my wrist was red and inflamed and itchy. Next day this had spread to my arm and torso. Next day it was both arms, torso and buttocks. I couldn't sleep with the itch. Long story short, I ended up in hospital. They first gave me antihistamine then Prendisolone then because my blood test showed an elevated white cell count referred me to an immunologist. Our friend (a ameritas prof.med)suggested a dermitologist who did a biopsy. That came back as consistant with Pityriasis lichenoides chronica. I looked this up and it didn't feel right as I had not been anywhere or done anything different nor am I a 30 year old male.
I am currently having Ultraviolet treatment. Today I have made an appointment to see my doctor again to discuss this website and what you guys are experiencing. I will contact the Teraputic Goods Administration in Australia today. Thank you to all of you. Good Luck.

Allergy to Acai Berry - best skin solution by: irishjdf
I commented earlier on my skin reaction to Acai berry, but forgot to mention the best way to get rid of the skin problem caused by it. I thought it was keratosis and bought some Eucerin Plus Intensive Repair Body Creme. I first used this product when given by an allergist when I found out I was allergic to penicillin and broke out in a fungal type rash many years ago. He gave me boxes of samples of this product. It is an amazing product. It actually exfoliates and helps smooth out the skin. You have to use it religiously, but it helps heal up the breakout on the skin. I also took Source Naturals Wellness Forumla which restores balance to any reaction that is not normal in the body. It helped rid my body of the Acai poison. At least I know it cleared up faster taking it.

Allergy To Acai..figured out by: irishjdf
I heard that Acai Berry was a good antioxidant and good for the immune system. I have congestive heart failure...diagnosed about 3 years ago when I was 37 caused by an adenovirus. I heard this berry was good for people like me who try to keep their immune system up and stay healthy.
About a week after taking Acai berry twice a day I broke out with a serious skin rash in many places on my body. My arms were red and I didn't know at the time it was the berry...it looked like keratosis of some sort. I realized that this supplement was the only thing different in my daily routine that could have caused it. I stopped taking it and it took a long time for my body to get back to normal.
There should be a warning with this product that some people have serious reactions to it. I guess just because they find a new berry in the rainforest, it doesn't mean we should be eating it. Its properties might be for some other animal or purpose.

Acai Allergy? by: Anonymous
I have been drinking Bossa Nova Acai juice and noticed I was very nervous. I started feeling so nervous I was waking up throwing up and was having panic attacks. I called the company and they say they do not add any stimulants or caffeine to their drinks. The only thing I can think of is I am allergic to the acai berry itself. The doctor told me that because I had been drinking it for over a couple of weeks, it would take at least five days to get out of my system.

I too had an allergic reaction to acai berry by: Anonymous
I only took Acai for one dose, but that was enough, thanks to these articles I discontinued use. After my first dose of Acai Berry (in pill for 500mg) I got what felt to be blisters under my toung and my gums seemed a little more sensetive (I ate some pineapple and it stung a little bit under my toung and my gums)I also am suffering from very chapped lips and what appears to be little mini cold sores (but thankfully they haven't really turned into anything...yet anyways). I found these articles and when the symptoms arose I knew I better stop using it before it got any worse, it has been a few days now and I am still waiting for my lips to get back to normal the bumps under my tongue went away within a few hours. Thank-you very much to everyone for posting this info, if it hadn't been for you I'm sure I would look like and absolute mess right now. Thanks guys

I purchased the Vitamin Shoppe Acai Juice Blend. I drank it that evening and my face started warming up about 20 minutes later. I thought that the Acai must've been boosting my metabolism. I took 1 to 2 capsules of Acai per day and on the 5th day broke out. I am suffering from a rash that is hot, like hives. No cure but waiting it out. I tried pure aloe vera juice, antibiotic creams. The only thing that seems to take away the discomfort is lip balm for chapped lips. (Moore Medicated Lip Ointment) I am on day 2 of this horrible rash that is on my left side of the face, creeping over to my right side. It is also behind my ears; my lips are swollen and feel cracked when I run my tongue over them. I have two tiny little sores on my tongue as well. Also, my right eye had a blood dot (I never get this). I also tried a ice pack and it gave me some relief. Benadryll a little. I had to really search for a web site that had this complaint...all the Acai sales sites intercepted my search! Damn them to hell!

PLEASE HELP by: Anonymous
Please tell me that this nightmere will finish some day. So many people have had the same problem, could you plese give some feedback if it ever goes away. After taking Acai berry pills for 2 weeks, I've had this horrible rash on my feet for over 3 weeks, and it's getting bigger. Now it started spreading on my face too.
No medicine, no cure. It's going from bad to worse. If you know something that might help or if there is someone who succesfully got rid of it, PLEASE HELP. I'm really scared now.

I have also had the horrible looking itchy rash for over a month now. I've been thru antibiotics, steriods and all sorts of expensive prescription creams and it won't go away. It was almost gone once, but I didn't know what I was reacting to, so I started taking it again and it was back within 24 hours. HELP .... I'm tired of itching and looking like a freak!!!!!

body lotion by: Anonymous
I bought Naturally Victoria Secret hydrating body lotion ACAI BERRY & MAGNOLIA. I shaved my legs and the next day I had thousands of blood spots under my skin, especially on my legs, ut also on my arms where I used the Acai Berry cream. My legs also feel tight on the skin and there is some swelling. I have had this for four days so far and I only used the cream once. I read on another web site that it can cause swelling of the blood vessels, and I think that is why there are so many red spots. I have had head aches and my stools have changed color. I wouldn't recommend this product.

Daughter's reaction by: Anonymous
I gave my daughter a couple doses of the Acai Emergen-C when she started developing a cold. Her face got bumpy, then turned red, and then swelled up like a pufferfish! I thought it was some kind of virus but the doctor thought it was an allergic reaction. The only thing new that she has had was the Acai Emergen-C I didn't think that could be it till I read this site. Thanks for the info.

Acai Poison by: Anonymous
I took the Acai 500 mg Capsules from Organica for 2 weeks. It was supposed to be a source of antioxidants for the maintenance of good health. Instead, it turned out to be the source of extremely itchy rash on my legs for another 2 weeks (stil no signs of any relieve after trying almost all possible over the counter medicaments - only calamine lotion easies temporarily the rash). The only result I got from the Acai Capsules is my bad nightsleep since the rashes and hives seem to activate between 1 am and 4 am. I'm really sorry that I didn't find this website before buying this poison.

"heat" response to acai by: Anonymous
I am very sensitive to foods that produce a heat response in the body, and sometimes have oral herpes outbreaks from them. I'm thankful to find this site, and grateful to everyone for letting me know that the crazy symptoms: high blood pressure, rapid heartbeat and itching are probably from the "healthy" acai tea I started drinking. Glad to have the problem figured out before it escalated into anything worse! I'm going back to blueberries...

Acai can be too "hot" for some individual by: Anonymous
Acai berry, along with another hot plant supplement, Goji, is by nature cosidered "hot" in their constitution by Chinese herbal medicine. What that means is that for some individual who has also a "hot" constitution this will result in reactions like a sore throat, a rash, a sore gum (and cold sore)and swollen lips, break out (like pimple) on the skin, headache, bowel problems, mild nose bleeing and etc. It's like adding gasoline to fire and basically your immune system is overreacting and lots of inflammatory symptoms result.
One way to get around is to take reduce the amount of intake so the body won't be so "hot". For some people the fruits just might be too much to consume.

I am so happy to have found this site. I really thought I was losing my mind. Day 1 I drank half small bottle a 6oz. serving within five minutes my heart rate increased and I immediately developed a headache. I thought it was from me drinking it on an empty stomach. This feeling lasted well over 8 hrs. The next day I drank it again after lunch. the same feelings except the headache was not as bad. Day three same thing so I decided to cut my loses as I really felt as if I were taking dexatrim.

WOW - I'm really glad I found this site. I've been taking the Acai Berry capsule for about 8 months and for the last two months have developed an aweful rash on my cheeks, like adualt acne, but more like pussulets...gross. I too thought mybe it was my face lotion, face cleanser, pillowcase...I did everything to make changes so that my face would clear up and nothing, it's so red and inflamed. I found this site today and I'm so glad I did. I'm so bummed, because like all of you I loved what the Acia Berry did in weight loss and cleansing. I will throw away my remaining pills and see if my skin clears up. I too, will see what else there is out there to use for high antioxidants. Thanks for all the input:)

Alleric to acai berry by: Anonymous
Last March, I tried acai berry juice to lose weight. I got a very bad sore throat, swollen lips, and sores on my tongue. I thought I had a herpes infection and my doctor prescribed anti-viral medication. It took over two weeks to subside. I didn't go back to the acai berry drink, because I lost so much weight from not being able to eat. (I didn't know the acai berry caused my symptoms at that time.) In August, I started drinking acai berry juice again, and got a sore throat and itching on my back. I had a hugh red circle on my back and one on my arm. Then my lips swelled up and my tongue got the sores again. MY doctor put me on a maintenance plan of anti-viral medication. In October, after drinking acai berry again, my red spots flared up again and my throat was sore. My doctor sent me to a dermetologist to have my spots biopsied. That came back as a drug allergy/interaction. I stopped all over the counter and perscription drugs. The red sports faded to light purple, but never went away. Then this March, my daughter brought home a bottle of acai berry juice. She did not drink it, so I started to drink it (remember, I didn't know was allergic to it). I started itching, my spots flared up all red, my lips swelled up. I was not taking any medications so I just thought to look up allery to acai berry, because it was the only thing I added to my diet since October. (I was eating the exact same thing for breakfast, lunch and dinner since October, to not have anything like this itching sore throat and swollen mouth happen to me.)And I found this site. I will never touch acai berry again.

I am not sure if I am allergic to acai berry pro . I do have bad allergies to grass, dust, mold etc. But after I began taking the capsules my throat begin hurting {like from drainage} and I developed a dry cough. I kept blaming it on the rainy, windy weather but I have decided to quit taking it for awhile to see if the symptoms clear up. I did not really feel any energy surge either. I have also noticed my lips have become dry and peeling. I am really disappointed.

I only had taken 6 capsules by the time I was itching like crazy. My thighs still have some bumps but the stomach, the swollen face, the fatty areas on my back looked like frog warts, I have a place on my breast that looks like it may take a while for the marks to go away. My doctor thinks I am allergic to the RED capsule (perhaps) then he said "don't take the stuff" my attorney said ask for every time and compensation for my itching and grief. I don't sue...I just want to warn others. Be careful what you take. I haven't ever taken anything to try to loose weight before. Well, I have learned my lesson. Joyce P. Heber Springs Arkansas

Swollen hands and rashes! by: barb
I thought I was going crazy having swollen hands, little rashes, but I wonder if I too had an allergic reaction to acai berries/blend drink. I bought Boost from QVC and really liked the energy it gave me. But after blood work proving there was not a cause for the swelling, it was the only new additive to my diet. I feel a liitle better knowing others had reactions (not your reactions were fun of course). Now I know the probable cause and can start wearing my wedding rings again!

My torso and hip area has the red rashes. I have never had hives or any rash in my life! Not too itchy, but irritating enough. I have been taking the pill form for about 4 weeks. I also thought the rash was coming from new detergent, but this is not the case. I am extremely disappointed because I am seeing results and it's a great energy booster, however I am not into bad skin. Scalp feels weird, I am breaking out on my chin which is not typical for me. I will certainly be calling tomorrow for my money back.

Acai & Peanut Allergy Comparisons by: Anonymous
Although not as severe as a potential fatal peanut experience it is interesting to look at the issues coming up (although this is a very small sample of stories so far) on the Acai.
It would take a few hundred more of these stories and then the process of getting all the medical results to a collaborative state to begin even thinking of a major warning.
Peanut allergies have been known for decades. The Acai is relatively new to the Western Cultures. With the mass marketing and general good health results in the Easter Cultures it's natural to trust the stories heard and positive testimonials we read on it's shear benefits.
But, no matter what you decide to do you should always consult a trained medical professional before taking on a new food group like this one.
I hope everyone in this blog gets well soon.

does it ever go away? its been 2 weeks since it started, I thought for sure I had scabies or some wierd ailment, the only thing new in my diet was the acai, but changed to dye free laundry soap etc, elminated everything else, finally last week went to the Dr, she said it was some type of dermatitis brought on by an allergic reaction to something, well mystery solved only thing new in routine is the addition of sambozan acai juice. she put me on prednisone and still takng benedryl around the clock for the itch, it's on my legs stomach arms, appears it may be fading but not fast enough for me. will go back to drinking cranberry and grape juice, at least we know more about them, instead of a jungle fruit that has not been evaluated by the fda. Sure is scary feeling.

After taking ACAI Capsules on the 2nd day I began itching a little. That night my head and neck itched immensly. It began on my head day one..my head just itched and itched. Day two it got on my chest. The bumps look like goose bumps that are turning into rashy red measles. I thought it was scabies or the mange and googled photos like crazy...but it was clustered like an allergic reaction..like hives. Day 4 my tummy broke out and looked all bumpy. Its systemic and its following the body. Today its gowing down my arms and is on my legs. I haven't taken any ACAI today because I thought it might be the cause. I got some Avena anti itching cream and it seems to help. When I shower every red welp burns like hot fire. No warnings on the bottle. My ears are itching at this moment - its horrible itching itching itching. I want my money back. Acai tried to charge my credit card for another bottle (not ordered)..the credit card company called me and I was shoked. This company is a bit crooked Oprah should know all this.

Thank you for posting your symptoms! by: Anonymous
About three weeks ago I picked up a green tea with acai. I've only been drinking it at work.
Around the same time, I started getting very active intestinal sounds, more than usual. Then I got eczema on my face (never had it there, only on my hips and eyelids when I am exposed to peanuts). Then I started feeling itchy, like I had insects biting me all over. Just over a week ago, I broke out in hives on my elbows. A few days ago I noticed hives on my chest and back.
At first I thought I had developed an egg allergy, so I eliminated eggs. Then I thought it was soy. Eliminated that too. Yet the hives and the itchiness continued. I changed laundry detergents. I increased my supplements. I changed to a fragrance free moisturizer (previously used one with essential oils for scent - no man-made chemicals). Itchiness spread all over. And then I started having pain in my joints.
Today at work, I looked over at my tea and decided to see what acai allergy symptoms might look like. To my relief, from what many posters have written, this looks like it could be it. What was confusing me was that my symptoms haven't really subsided. But I have only been not drinking the acai green tea for 2 days out 7 each week. From what you all have posted, that seems to fit what you are reporting. What I read though is that the itchy feeling might last two more weeks (at least).
Has the itchiness gone away for any of you? How long did it take?

Wow! I thought I was losing my mind. Many thanks to all of you who posted comments. I bought the acai supplements at my local health food store on Monday. I noticed a change in my energy level & was very excited. However, Tuesday my head began itching...and I've never had dandruff...then Wed. the itching became worse and spread all over my whole body. Thursday night I was itching so bad and broke out with a rash. I couldn't figure out what was causing it. I hadn't changed detergents. So Friday morning I decided to google allergic reactions to acai and found all of this information! Crazy! I think they should have a warning label on the bottle if this many people are being affected.

Going on two weeks and cant stop itching by: Anonymous
I started out about two weeks ago itching all over. Then a rash started on my legs and continue over days to spread up my body. I went to the emergency room and received a steriod shot and something for the itching called atarax. Another problem is that the atarax can and did start constipation which added to all this chaos too. Over the next week I received oral steriods which are making me eat like a horse and gain alot of weight quickly. The aveeno oatmeal (soak)baths with baking soda sprinkled in the water have been one of the things to give me temporary relief and then using the aveeno calamine and pramoxine hcl anti-itch cream after drying off. This gives some relief until the itching comes back again. I have taken Zyrtec and benadryl and still the rash is not going away. I don't know how long it will last and cannot stand the itching all over my body. I thought I had scabies but now realize it is just a reaction to the ACAI Berry Supreme oral pills. I took the Acai berry for about 1 -2 weeks off an on and could not think about what caused the rash and welts all over my body. It looks like red dots, raised pink welts and are really bad around the back of my knee, inner fold of my elbow, stomach area. I feel sorry for any one having to go through this. It is awful and will make me think twice before trying any thing like this again. I have been out of work for a week and I don't know what to do since I have to go back and have yet to get relief from all the itching. The rash will not go away. I have never had reactions to anything before. Hope this blog helps someone who is going through what I am. If anyone finds a true cure...I hope they put it out on this blog.

I think I am allergic to acai berry juice/puree. I started taking about 15-20ml per day (about 1/2 of the MFR's recommended dose) on 2/19 and have started to have itching all over and some rash since 2/25. The only thing that I have new in my diet is the acai berry juice and I found out that some people have reported similar allergic reactions to acai supplement and/or pure juice on the Internet. I have stopped taking it today so that I might find relief in a few more days, hopefully. The product I took was NOT considered an inferior product from Whole Foods and it contains Organic Acai berry juice with puree and grape juice to enhance its flavor, and I know for certain that I'm not allergic to grapes nor grape juice.

Well I was so excited to start my trial of the supplement capsules. This past Tues. I took my first pill in the AM, by the afternoon I noticed a slight pink tone to my skin on my face. I didn't pay that much attention to it. The next day took a second pill, and by the afternoon, my skin on my face was very hot and had whelps. I did notice some slight itching and my face feels very tight and swollen. Now this morning I have not taken anything and my face is on fire and hurts. I have put some Benedryl cream on and have taken an antihistimine in hopes this might give me some relief. I would not advise this on anyone. Don't take the chance.

I started taking 1 oz. of Genesis Acai Berry on Saturday, and by mid-morning I was experiencing a sore throat. Thought nothing of it, though it lasted through the night. Sunday morning I drank another ounce, and within a few minutes, my throat started to shut down. I thought I was going to choke and kept on coughing. I realized then that this was an allergic reaction. Will quit taking it altogether. Too bad, cause I thought the properties would be good for me, and also because of the expense incurred.

Yes, I had an allergic reaction to the acai blend drink by: Karen
Like others I heard so much about this wonderful berry. I live here in California and we have wonderful fruits- I eat strawberries, blueberriest etc with no issues. I do not have any allergies at all to anything. I visited my friend who is a distributor and I tried the active and the pulse drink.... within 20 min. I had an allergic reaction, I was very disappointed, as I am typing this right now I still have minor itching and a bit uncomfortable with the bumps associated with an allergic reaction. My friend told me I should try just 1 ounce instead of the two. I told them not interested. I have nothing to gain by lying , this is the truth and when ever anyone tries it they should only try 1 ounce just to see if any reaction.

Acai Energy and Joint Pain Relief by: Arnie, Irvine CA
I feel for all of you that are having allergic reaction to this wonderful gift from Nature in the Acai Berry. I was introduced to it about 9 months ago in the form of a juice drink. Very famous company but I know we are not suppose to mention names here for some reason. Oh well.
In any event, the initial 2-3 weeks my stomach was acting up and a total body cleansing seemed to be underway based on my reaction to the juice. Then it just settled down about the 4th week or so. I found myself drinking less coffee in the morning and still having wonderful energy. Not a boost per se but feeling good and wanting the day to get rolling
The biggest plus I have though is my hip and knee pain is gone. Im well over 40 so its all down hill in the joint category for me and inflammation challenges. This wonderful drink seems to have taken all of that off the table and I am pain free. No Advil, no Aspirin in fact Im not taking anything but my 81mg Aspirin in the morning for those of us over 40 we all share in this therapy from our doctors.
The Acai has been a godsend to me and others in my community who I have shared this with. Well wishes to all of you suffering allergic reaction as this is truly a wonderful gift from nature in the Acai berry. Wish you could enjoy it as I have.

Hives by: Anonymous
Hives are usually caused from an allergic reaction. Just like some people are allergic to strawberries, peanuts etc. Some of us have allergic reactions and some have what is known as an intolerance to something we eat or drink. So more than likely all of us on this page with comments to the Acai berry are having some type of allergic reation or our system has an intolerance to it....

Acai Berry Powder and Stomach Cramps by: Anonymous
I started taking Acai Berry Powder mixed in my juice last week. On the 4th day, I had such horrible stomach cramps that I couldn't eat and my stomach was very bloated. I stopped drinking it for 4 days and tried it again yesterday.
Again, it made my stomach rather upset and bloated. I am going to try and cut the dose in half and take it every other day. I hope that works because the powder was not cheap!
But, if it doesn't work, the cramping and bloating is certainly not worth whatever benefits I am getting from drinking the powder.

Major Itching by: Anonymous
I started on the Acai Berry about 3 weeks ago after reading its praises from the Websites.I was singing its praises too until I started itching, breaking out in hives and bumps all over from top to bottom and I mean bottom.
Actually I only took it for 2 weeks when I noticed the break outs.
I did notice more enery and some weight loss but not worth what I'm going through now.
Hope the itch and hives don't last long.I'm taking Zyrtec now in hops it'll help.

Food Allergies by: Alexa in Melbourne
Food allergies can be very painful. In fact, they tend to be the one's that cause the most disruption from hives through stomach pains or discomfort. No easy way to know by individual what you may or may not be allergic to.
The Acai is of the Amazon and thus for generations our North American diets have not been introduced to it. Yes its an amazing food from a health perspective and maybe even one day to fight diseases like Cancer (Florida University study).
I wouldn't put the Acai in a deadly food group category either. Think about how many millions of people suffer from eating Peanuts around the world. Fatal for some. But we still see mixed nuts to Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches don't we.
Not all foods can be consumed by everyone. So be careful and don't over dose on a new food group all at once. Take it slow and see if your body can handle it. Or, best case, go see your family doctor and discuss this with him or her.

Bloating and Cramps by: Waverdr
I am a very fit surfer who eats well and though id give acai a go. I tried some in the past and had no reaction to it and felt it gave me extra energy and zing. So i did some research and found a company that will sell 1 kilo of the freeze dried acai pulp pure. Ive been taking it for a week now and have been getting really bad stomach cramps, wind and lower intestine spasms. Thought id try and ride it out as part of the cleansing but not any more. Today was so bad i was doubled over in heaps of pain with cramps and frequent trips to the loo. Will stop taking it now and see how i go. I was taking a heaped teaspoon full of the pure freeze dried pulp. Has anyone else experienced the cramps, wind and pain with acai? Anyone want to buy a cheap kilo of acai pulp ;-)

Me, too!! by: Kristi
I think I'm also allergic. I already have many food allergies, including bananas (I'm trying to find out if acai is related to banana). Yesterday I ate some gummies with acai powder as an ingredient (first time I ever ate these) and broke out in hives on my face and neck, buttocks, arms, legs and lips. I look a horse-sized dose of benadryl and went to bed, but am still a little itchy today.
Sheesh. I wonder how widespread this is... just because something is supposed to be good for you doesn't mean that the potential doesn't exist for it to also cause an allergy.

I think I'm Allergic by: Anonymous
I am trying my second Acai berry product in capsule form. When I used the first stuff, I noticed a bit of skin irritation but I didn't really think anything of it or link it to the acai berry because I have naturally sensitive skin. I stated the new product last night and have been itching all day, now my skin is all red and burning with raised lumps that could be hives. I think I might be allergic and I am so unhappy because I had some luck loosing weight with the other product and I read that this one is supposed to be more effective. Has anyone consulted a doctor about these allergies? I read that you might have problems if you are already allergic to certain types of berries, but I've never had a food allergy before.

Yep! Had a Reaction! by: Linda
Well, I ordered ACAIBurn and was so excited to receive it! Took it about 2 this afternoon & here I am on the computer @ 2:30 a.m. ITCHING! I see other have had this same reaction. My hands are itching really bad as well as my scalp. I so far only have HUGE red raised welts around my waist. Hope that's as far as it goes. I am not normally allergic to anything, but I guess I've finally found something now. Unfortunate. I was really looking forward to hopefully reaping some really great benefits from this berry. I have taken Benedryl, which is helping a little with the itching I think. Seems that hasn't even helped some people. Hope it can help me. I believe I can stand the itching it that's as far as it goes, but sitting here a little worried about further reactions that may pop up like breathing problems, heart palps, etc. I pray not! Oh well...good luck to everyone. Hope we all quit itching! God Bless!

Acai, Goji Berry Allergies by: Keith in NH
Everyone,
I am not saying that you are going crazy or that you are wrong in your assumption of the Acai Berry being the culprit. People are highly allergic to Peanuts on this planet and it can be lethal to some. So all I am saying is that in our Processed World we live in that products can have varying degrees of ingredients that could be the ultimate culprit. I do not recommend playing doctor on food allergies. I would engage a professional and diagnose the situation with all the variables (formulation) presented to the doctor for examination.
I believe every one of you have had an allergic reaction of some nature. But there are also thousands if not millions of people not having problems with the various Acai Juice or Berry products.

Acai Berry Questions by: Roberta
I would love to know whether or not Im allergic to the Acai berry or the Acai Juice Manufacturer. However, the pain the hives the sores & itching were so paid I would never want to test it out on myself.
My resistance got so bad I even ended up with an outbreak of Shingles. Im a very healthy, active (not bad looking) 50 yr. Im really just happy to know Im not alone with having such crazy reactions to a drink with a berry. Iam not allergic to anything else that is way this is so curious to me. Never had any allergies growing up.
I really think we all need to be careful trying anything new that may react to our systems. I sell franchises for a living and was really hoping all the vitamins would give me a little boost guess not. Anyway with all the money this Acai Juice manufacturer is making it would be nice for them to do some research on their products.

Well Keith I think that this page with all the same reactions to this fruit from the purest form to different brands says enough! We are not slamming a product, it's more or less a forum that helps us compare different forms of reactions from ACAI. I had a severe reation, some didn't have it for more then 2 days. Here it is 2 weeks later and I still have minor signs of the reaction. And to conclude you say dont give up on a product. Well unless you have had the bad reactions that we all have had, you would stop its use. There are other supliments out there. Everyones metabolism is different.

Be carefull when you talk about a fruit or food item and isolate it out as the cause of an allergic reaction folks. Just naming a juice drink like you have makes me want to research the label as no drink in the USA or World is Pure anything anymore.
Before you give up on a product or in this case the Acai Berry isolate all the ingredients in the product with a trained professional like your Doctor.

Extreme acai reaction by: DaveB.RI
I had taken an 8 oz bottle of acai juice last week on tuesday afternoon.Tuesday night I had little blisters around my nose. I didn't think anything of it. Wednesday I had another 8 oz bottle and by late night my nose was very enflamed. Thursday morning my whole face was swollen hives all over my neck with yellowish fluid coming out. They all itch real bad. Friday both of my eyes were swollen shut and could not see. Here it is about a week later and I can now just see out of my eyes. I had taken Benedryl but it never helped or stop the reaction. It has spread all over my body all the way to my feet. After reading about other reactions on other boards it does seem that if you have an allergy to strawberry and or palm oil its may have an adverse reaction to you. This little berry has not been around enough and tested for any allergies.

Like so many others who have submitted comments, I started drinking MV, then a less expensive Zola acai supplement. For the first time in my life I broke out in hives in several places. The most pronounced were those on my lips. The kids called me Daffy Duck. Having never suffered from allergies, the only change in my diet was the acai. It seems pretty clear to me that this was the culprit. Too bad, as I felt energetic when drinking it. There is always a chance the energy was a placebo effect, but it worked none the less.

Acai and Packaging by: Anonymous
Fully understand your concern about the Acai. This is a relatively "new" food to western culture as such allergies to the berry are possible as with any food group or type.
You say you bought the Acai in form that may include other ingredients as well. Other than picking the berry from a tree (naturally) you are probably being exposed to many additional ingredients other than the Acai Berry itself.
Take the product to your family doctor and have him or her evaluate the label.

Acai is not a product by: Oscar
Dear Annonomous,
I feel for your allergic reaction but you talk about taking the "product" and stopping as such when the hives started vs goji. Well, Im afraid to say that the Acai Berry is not a Product. It's a berry. So you are either misinformed and need to have the "Product" label reviewed on what ever it is you are drinking by a medical professional. Only then will you know what the problem is.
Once you isolate the true culprit then you will know for sure.

Acai For Life by: Renae
I have now been enjoying my Acai Berry juice drink for 13 months. I took the juice to my doctor to make sure all was well. As he told me there are never guarantees in the world of food allergies so buyer beware.
Made me a bit nervous at first but the benefits I was reading and hearing about were items I was seeking. After more research I decided to buy a 3 month supply. It was cheaper at that volume. A bit risky if the first month created a problem but I was determined.
I had a lot of gas and stomach belching. But as I entered the second month (about the 5th bottle I recall) that all went away. Im now feeling good and taking about 4 ounces a day of the acai juice blend. There are actually over 15 fruits in this blend Im taking.
Now in my 14th month of drinking the acai juice and all is well. My blood work numbers are all in-line or under the targets which is great and a first for me.
Im sure (reading other posts here) there are those that just cannot enjoy this wonderful berry. For me, it's like a gift.

Disappointed by: Jillian
I started taking an Acai supplement about 3 weeks ago. Gradually, I thought I was using the bathroom an awful lot, but thought it was all in my mind, until I was up 15 times one night. Thought I was getting a bladder infection. Just had my wellness checkup about 6 weeks ago and I was very healthy. Went to the doctor after the night of 15 bathroom trips. No bladder infection, but also had very high blood pressure. My doctor said I could be having an adverse reaction to the Acai berry supplements. Since nothing else had changed in my diet or life style. So I'm no longer taking them and in just a day my bladder is no longer spasing out and my blood pressure is back to normal. Don't know if my supplements could have something in them not listed, it's suppose to be 100% organic Acai, and the bottle doesn't list anything other than what the capsule is made of. Anyway I'm disappointed, I think the Acai is probably a good thing, but I guess I'm allergic to it.

Food Allergies by: Stephen Marks, KY
While some have allergies to foods and fruits others do not. In fact, you will find that most foods and fruits are absolutely fine for the majority of the worlds populations. Regionally you may find some foods have an adverse effect on the population when new things are introduced like the Acai Berry of the Amazon to the western world.
However, if you were to take a poll of 300,000,000 people assuming every single one of them took the Acai Bery or Goji or etc. You will find that the numbers are very low that have a negative effect.
I keep reading these notes below and can't help feel for those that had a reaction but with the exception of a few of the stories (assuming they are all factual and I believe they are) it is hard to isolate if it's the Acai Berry or something else in the mix.

Allergy? by: Kari E
I'm not sure if I am allergic to Acai or not. It is hard because this is the "itchy skin" time of year for me anyway, but my skin was breaking out on my face (I have rosecea), worse than ever. I stopped the acai, but also stopped the progesterone cream that I was using. I started both of them at the same time so I wasn't sure what was causing it. This morning I added back the acai, and my skin is driving me crazy! Itchy back and sides, but no rash. I think I'll just stop the acai. Anybody else who is allergic to acai, you may want to try black elderberry. The juice is delicious, or it comes in pill form too. It is supposed to be a fantastic antioxident, and gets rid of cold and flu within 3 days (My whole family is proof of that!)
I have to go scratch now!
Sorry to hear about your allergic reaction. This is such a wonderful all natural supplement for the food group. Not everyone can drink milk either so on a percentage basis some people will be tolerant to Acai Berries while others will see a possible allergic reaction.
I always feel sorry for those who have bodies that cannot tolerate some of natures most wonderful gifts. The Acai Berry has been wonderful to myself and my kids. We are very Active with sports and good health and fitness so we are always challenging our joints and muscle groups.
The acai berry blend we are drinking from Mona Vie has bee fantastic for us. I know it doesn't always work that way for all but we are very happy with it and have been for 4 months now. Even have the Acai Gel packs for traveling. Not as sweet tasting but we never miss a day without our Acai Berry juice!

So, in answer to the people trying to tell others that they are breaking out from inferior products, all I can say is that a supposed superior product is making me ill! What a bummer............

Yet another unpleasant reaction... by: Anonymous
I'm just here to add yet another case to the growing list. I am not at all prone to ANY environmental, seasonal or food allergies but I had a SoBe Life Water for the first time today that had Acai extract in it. Within an hour or so my body started to be covered in large, REALLY itchy hives - on my face, arms, belly, back, legs. I'm hoping an antihistamine I took will offer some relief soon. With the exception of an additional juniper berry extract in this drink, the Acai was the only other ingredient I had never consumed before. Searching the web, I was unable to find any comparable reports of allergic reactions to juniper extract. So, like everyone else here, I'm starting to believe I've just experienced a strong reaction to Acai.

Acai Allergy by: Anonymous
I, too had an unpleasant reaction to the acai berry. I purchased some mixed berry with acai organic toaster pastries. I had absolutely no allergies to any of the ingredients on the list, such as strawberries and blueberries, which I have also had since then with no ill effect. But within 10 min of consuming one my mouth was dry and itchy, 1/2 an hour after that I broke out in hives all over my body. Some were bigger than my hand with the fingers splayed. They felt EXACTLY like giant patches of mosquito bites.
I could only take Benedryl at night because it makes me fall asleep and I had to work. Essentially, Benedryl was useless, though it did chase the itch away while I slept. It took five days for them to stop popping up. It spread from my thighs, stomach and mid-back to my arms, hands, lower legs and feet, and all the way up my throat to my chin before they went away.
I am quite disappointed because I have heard of the health benefits of acai and wanted to start introducing a small amount into my diet. And they were very, very tasty pastries! I have even had products by the company that made these and not had a problem. Acai was the only x-factor.
I will know now to talk to my doctor ahead of time. That was very good advise. I hope that my testimony helps others, that I am not the only person that had that strong of a reaction, which I had NEVER had to anything before. Once or twice I got a hive on my lip that went away in an hour or two, I have even had dry, itchy mouth and throat. But never have I had patches of hives the size of dessert plates that lasted for five days.
I agree, consult your doctor and make sure they are aware of what you are about to start. I envy those of you that can enjoy this delightful fruit. Please, enjoy it for me.

Alleriges to exotic foods by: Kip
Any time you eat a food group for the first time in your life you are open to the possibilities of some level of reaction. The body has never been tested so if you have been prone to food allergies do the safe thing.
Consult your family doctor. Bring a sample of the food you are considering. Perhaps he or she can run some tests in a controlled environment.
I have been allergic to beans. I still eat them and over the years I have had less and less of a reaction as I firmly believe that my body has been building up a tolerance to the beans and they are so good for you.
With the Acai berry or the Goji berry (examples I read here) they seem to be mixed with multiple variables. How do you know for sure it is the berry/fruit.
Once again been safe and consult your doctor if you are concerned. Lifes treasures like the Acai Berry are worth the extra step. Trust me I am seeing great results with pain free knees and hips. I sleep great at night and have energy all day long. Not the hyper energy just plain olld I don't get tired anymore like I used to.

Acai Juice Blends by: Carole, Boston
Did you literally take the powder with no other additives? Hard to believe that. Most Acai Berry blends are just that. Blends. Thus there are several additions typically to the formulation of the juice and in most cases the pill form too.
From what I can tell its hard to isolate what happened here. Have you talked to your doctor? Bring the powder or what ever you took to them and have them analyze it to make sure you are allergic to the Acai Berry and not something else.
We have many allergies personally but have been taking the Acai Active blend from Mona Vie International for over 10 months with no issues.
Not sure what product you are getting your ACAI powder from. Is it pure Acai? In the United States I doubt that it is but Im not expert. You need to take that product to your family doctor and have them review the label with you. I have been taking an Acai Juice product (not a powder) from a company called Mona Vie and I have had no adverse reactions in over 14 months.
Im sure what you are experiencing is real. The only way you can isolate the real allergy (if that is what it is) would be professionally. Pure Acai is not easy to find. I haven't found it and I have seen ads that when you dig deep enough they are 4-10% actual Acai and then multiple additives or other supplements.
Best to take this to a doctor who can help you through this. Don't perform surgery on yourself I always say.

Allergies to Acai by: Samantha, Chicago
I have never heard of anyone having an allergic reaction to this wonderful little berry. The Acai is so powerful for our diets. Roberta, have you discussed this with your personal doctor and had further tests?
Not that this sis the only antioxidant wonder of the world but its getting so much visibility that you should have a second and manybe third opinion about the reaction you had. All the manufacturers develop and process the frui in their own unique way. You may be allergic to something in the Xocai Chocolate product or process. Worth the effort in my opinion to determine exactly what was causing the problem.
The mere fact that you said you took the Acai with the Xocai tells me you cannot determine without reasonable doubt that it was the Acai Berry causing the reaction.
The Acai is not known to prevent anything by the way. It has been used in the Amazon for centuries and their longetivity is without question. There have been some studies but no endorsements of any nature formally that I am aware of. Could be wrong but I don't think so or I would be going to the marketing press with my Mona Vie business!

Allergic to the acai berry by: Jennifer
Roberta, what a shame. From what I read it sounds like you had a reaction from Xocai? Have you actually had an alergy test performed by a physician? The reason I say this is that I once thought I had an alergic reaction to an additive but what actually happened was the additive was mixed with many different products and it turned out I was wrong. You really can't perform in-home tests on allergies as I found. See your doctor and have them test you specifically. Also, bring in the products you personally tested so they can analyze this for you.
