The Jakfruit of the Amazon is at first glance a very unusual looking fruit. It's shear size will have you taking a second look. The fruit grows to great lengths with some reaching 20 meters or more depending on the rainfall of that season. Many were planted in areas where the wind was so powerful that the trees provided a natural protection from mother nature.
The Jakfruit requires a warm environment with rainfall year round. The tree can survive very harsh conditions even the ability to withstand a frost. The trees are typically cut when very young to encourage the establishment of additional trunks and greater foundation to manage the weight of the fruit it produced.
The main harvest for the fruit is between January and June. Depending on the climate and area the fruit can flourish and be harvested year round. An individual fruit can weigh up to 40Kg but typically you will find them around 4-9Kgs. They should be harvested when they reach full form and will be ready to the taste within a week or so.
Don't be in a rush with the Jakfruit as the first yield is typically after three years.
Food preparation varies to your desire. You can fry or boil or even roast the fruit. Once ripened the fruit can be sliced open and eaten as would any vibrant fruit. This is a hearty fruit and the flesh must be cut out with a sharp object like a knife. There is a latex coating on the fruit that if you get it on your hands as you prepare fruit you may have to use kerosene to remove. We recommend an oil base on the knife to keep it from adhering to your skin on touch.
A rare fruit in deed!
