Off Season High School Practices

by Alan
(Honolulu, HI)

Now I know that every competitive High School Athletic program does this. Don't give me any grief that Your School runs a clean program. Our children are under constant pressure to work out and train year round.

What is going on here. Coaches and trainers are mentally forcing our kids to continue in the off season with their voluntary programs.

This is a farce. The rules are there to protect our kids from being over worked and abused in the sense that the sports are more important than the books. Where is the monitoring of the schools athletic directors?

I welcome your replies.

Alan

Academic Athletes are a Joke
by: Glen in Ohio

If anyone thinks there are truly Academic Athletes in the Football programs of the NCAA they are sorely mistaken. Sure maybe 10% I will give the NCAA that. But look at this farse we have here with our beloved Buckeyes of tOSU! Five guys caught cheating and the Coach Lies to everyone for the MONEY of the Bowl Games and to save the BCS the lost revenue from tne Networks.

This isn's supscious. This is wrong. They burned USC for 3 years, 2 Bowls and 30 scholerships for 1 athelete. tOSU players were allowed to play in their game and serve their punishment in a future year. No guarantee they would even play in 2011/12.

Cam Newton anyone? Daddy lied then admited he was selling his son the Quarterback to the highest bidder. Taped recordings show that. But the NCAA gave the kid the Heisman and then said he didnt know his Papa the Preacher (Liar) was selling his services for over $180,000. But the NCAA made up new rules.

College anyone? Parents even have heard of these things happening in our High School Football programs so where is going to stop! I say burn the NCAA and start over.

High School Football Schedules
by: Carrie

My son is a Freshman. So all of this is new. Being in Texas we don't ask a lot of public questions when it comes to High School Football. Lord Knows.

My son will be starting High School this Fall. They are already working his team out to get ready. These are young kids in the Hot sun. Are the coaches getting good training on water hydration and the heat impact?

What about the hours they are putting in? Our High School Football coach has them at 6am to 9am then again at 3p to 5p. This is a lot to ask a young man of 14-15 years of age physically let alone mentally.

Any Dads or Mom's out there with some advice. Be nice. Im from Texas.

Athlete Offseason Conditioning
by: Anonymous

I believe the whole notion of a High School Athlete going year round in one sport is a crime. The stress this places on the child is not manageable at such a young age. The coaching staffs tell the kids that it's optional. The school looks the other way. The academic athlete is no more.

Kids can not determine what is right or wrong when it comes to sports at this level. The coaches are their mentors to a high degree so a built in trust kicks in immediately. The school administration from the Principal to the Athletic Director are at fault. Then there is the League Officials. Each sport in high school is typically a member of some league or another.

Where are the league by-laws being enforced? Who polices the high school programs in the off season. No one. No one does because it brings in Money. The better the team the more gate dollars. So where are those books again and class notes I forgot about?

Coaching Pressure
by: Casey, Oahu

The pressure from the coaches is growing at an alarming rate, Alan. I can completely agree with your view. Our teams are having fun during the season. The practices always run over the 2 hour maximums and we shudder to think of what that is doing to their grades but I think we know the answer there too!

The real pressure is when the season ends and the kids just want to be kids! No, the coaches instill in them that their position on the team for next year could depend on their committement to the program in the off season?

This is wrong.

Casey
