Summer Exercise

by Carolyn Knapp
(Sacramento, CA)

With the warm weather we sometimes forget about the need to stretch. Hydration comes more naturally but the mind fools us sometimes into thinking the warm weather will do all the work for our joints.

Not the case. In fact, it doesn't matter what season we are in we must stretch. Drink plenty of fluids, we prefer good ole fashion tap water and stretch some more. By warming up our joints, muscles and overall body we stand a greater chance of having a good time in what ever we choose to do in the outdoors.

So, what can you do to stretch if you are at home. Use your walls and use your furniture (chairs) and slowly stretch your legs out by lifting and lowering your body paying careful attention to not over extending your joints. Do each stretching motion for a period of 10-15 reps and then alternate left and right body parts.

Hold your positions and slowly move out of each move to allow the body to reciprocate and begin the rebound to a new direction for the muscle tissue. Always a good rue of thumb.

Each warm up should be a minimum of 15 minutes before you run or take on a game of basketball as an example. Proper equipment should be an investment that varies with the sport or exercise you choose. No shortage of choices out there so do your homework and spend wisely.

Summer allows for a complete array of outdoor adventures. Take advantage of the free locations like your parks and local hillside. A simple hike requires good hydration in the hot sun and bring extra water as well. Can never have too much water! Have a blast and lose some of that tire around your waste this summer,

eBooks On Warm Up?
by: Natalie, Chicago

Reading your article makes me wonder if there is a good eBook on the proper techniques of warming up. I see too many youngsters just get out of the car and start running in soccer, basketball and football. I will leave baseball out of it as they stand around too much as it is.

Any hints on a good eBook for pre-game warm ups?

Natalie
