Tata Motors Abandons Site in West Bengal

by Racine
(Willimington, DE)

According to the BBC:

"India's Tata group has abandoned plans to build the world's cheapest car in the eastern state of West Bengal.

Tata group chief Ratan Tata said: "We have little choice but to move out of Bengal. We cannot run a factory with police around all the time."

He was speaking after protests in a row over land acquired from local farmers.

The car, the Nano, is expected to cost about 100,000 rupees ($2,130). It was due to be launched in October and will be ready "this year", Mr Tata said.

We will have to make the best of the deadline that we have
Tata group chief Ratan Tata

The BBC's Subir Bhuamik in Calcutta says the company is initially expected to produce several thousand Nanos this year at other sites in India. "

This means they are still building the car with Fossil Fuel designs for a country that can single handidly pollute the air like never before if they are mildly successful in building and distributing this car to the masses. We are all for affordable transportation but this is absurd environmentally. The very price will accelerate the selling of the worlds deadliest polluter the Fossil Fuel Combustion Engine.

Why not build a Clean Burning power plan for this? Come Tata get your heads in gear and stop this madness.

Tata Motors Idea
by: Claire

To many of us we think that Tata Motors has an idea that should be beneficial to the wonderful people of India. However, when you really look at the problems facing India the thought of Tata Motors supplying even more Gas burning polluting vehicles to even more of the population based on low priced entry models is absurd.

India needs a Clean transportation solution not Fossil fuel driven cars. Tata should pull back. Tata Motors should invest in an all electric design that will benefit the good people of India and the world. If they can do this on the Fossil side of the equation surely they can provide an electric alternative.

The world needs to step in and help India and China with transportation needs for their huge populations before it is too late and we all suffer the consequences. This is a worldwide problem not a transportation issue for low income areas.
