Teen health fitness incorporates many topics. We will attempt to take different areas of this topic and break them into categories such as active sport teens, males versus female articles, peer pressure and discussions. There are many trends that impact a teens decisions on what health directions they want to puruse. Many times a strong family presence is critical in how our teens make their personal decisions. When it comes to overall teen health fitness it will ultimately be a blend of all influences from their daily routines and social networks. If you are reading this as a parent know that this stage of development is by far the most challenging.
The peer pressure and racing hormones create a toxic emotional back drop for our children in search of teen health fitness. They want to fit in but not to the point of looking fake. They tend to think of their health and fitness in terms of how their weight distribution looks thus they diet or with some extereme cases (far too many) they starve themselves to look like the in crowd.
Often we try to teach our children that extra's like a gym pass are to be earned or perhaps they must pay for them on their own. Although we tend to agree on teaching our children how to earn those extra items they so treasure on this one we believe you are making a life style investment in your child. Parents, if you can afford the gym pass by all means spoil them.
Yes, a lot of these gyms are hang outs for socializing but given all the choices there is still a great advantage to having them there than elsewhere. Have them agree to a contract whereby they will work with a personal trainer of the gym to get them on a program desinged specifically for teen health fitness.
As we survey the high school sports programs there is an alarming trend which directly effects the overall fight against obesity. The trend with female atheltes from 13-17 is on the decline when it comes to continued participation in high school or (I dread the term) club sports.
This is very concerning to the fight against diabetes and in general the focus on a healthy active adult life for women. The body is no friend to aging as we all know. It declines rapidly and can become a difficult "mustang" to get back in the gate if we let it get out on the range too far, so-to-speak.
Thus, we must find a way to get our young female athletes to continue their desire to play. We cannot force children to pursue sports but we must make the programs attractive and exciting so that their interest stays high. Not to take one side over the other but girls tend to find the boys a lot quicker than the boys finding the girls! They naturally and mentally mature faster in most cases so their focus may have a more difficult challenge.
Sometimes it takes a coach to keep the interest. A person who gets to the kids at an early age. There are many examples of High School programs where the coach has a very successful track record and thus they continue to maintain high standards and keep the girls interested through their senior years. But we believe the problem is up above. We believe the interest drops because the College programs (with a few exceptions) is not deep enough to attract continued particpation as it is with the boys.
We know it doesn't happen over night but perhapst he major Division 1 and 2 schools can get some good old fashion advertising going to the kids so they have more to look up towards in the form of opportunity to play at the collegiate level. The more we create the desire the more girls we keep in programs so important to the fight against obesity and general illness associated with inflammation.

Well August is usually our month for family vacation. Not this year. This year we have two kids in college and one that has moved out of the house and ...
Teens Entering College
Teens entering college is on many parents minds right now. For those with graduated high school seniors this culminates over a year (in some cases a lifetime) of planning and hoping all leading to the crescendo of the promotional walk to the diploma for many. Our kids are turning into adults and as adults they are typically clueless. Many colleges today are looking at ways to incorporate teen health fitness programs into their freshman programs.
In truth, most are planning that escape for summer prior to starting their new 4 (hahahaha) to 5 year trek through the halls of our nations universities. The patterns are all the same. Our children are focused on the summer but weary of August as they must leave the nest and comforts of home for the unknowns of freshman year somewhere in the USA or abroad. June is the fun month when you think about it. Teen health fitness should be well underway at this point.
Family and friends gather and congratulate the senior graduating class and parents host parties to mark a tremendous milestone in their Childs life and in some cases first time college experience for families.
Not everyone goes to college nor needs to. Our children see all the attention placed on the event and then like it never happened they are off to party somewhere on the planet exciting or perhaps for some just a restful time at home doing absolutely nothing but responding to ad hoc calls from friends to go to here or there.
What a life! Then you have the ambitious group that either has a friend or sibling already in college that knows it takes money to survive (translation have fun) while in college. But let's get them focused hard on teen health fitness now so they are best prepared during the weight gain years of Freshman and Sophmore seasons.
So, keep in mind that, most likely, you will need to inquire about teen health fitness programs available in your college of choice.
Pre College Expense Thoughts
One of the many things we witnessed with our children going from High School to college (home and away) was the absolute clueless ability to understand it takes money beyond your stash in the piggy bank to survive nine months of socializing, studying and having some good times. College is fun if you allow it into your daily routine. This goes a long way towards total teen health fitness planning.
As I write this we have two children in college. One is commuting to a State school while the other is boarding on campus. The constant need for money does not go away after paying the tuition the books and the meal card.
Kids need to get out. They need to socialize within reason. This cost money as we all know. Impress apon your children that they have between 2 and 3 thousand put away. This is just about right if they are to go "job free" during their time in college. Sounds like a lot of money? Well our kids did it over the course of their senior year in high school and then working over each summer. They found a way. One waitresses and the other is doing construction jobs.
It can be done. You just have to get them started! Teen health fitness with reduced stress is a key to success in the early years of post high school.
First Week In College
Well you just dropped off your son or daughter. It was either a real quite ride or a very lively discussion. Depending on the level of maturity of your child (incoming Freshman vs a Transfer Student) this could have taken all sorts of interesting twists to the topics.
You park the car and begin the unload process which is translated into, I'm letting go of my child! You enter the dorm or apartment and for the first time see 15 to 20 people all with blank stares trying to figure out how five kids are going to live in a two bedroom arrangement with one bathroom.
Uh oh, the bunk bed. Who of the five will get stuck with the top bunk? Is there a proper way or is it truly first come first serve. The refrigerator looks new. But how do they figure out who's food is owned by who? Does it matter?
Then the day comes to an end and the hugs goodbye are over. The walk back to the car (if it's still there and doesn't have a ticket) is a long one. Last chance for Susie to jump in and go back home with you! Nope, it's a whole new day to a whole new life. At the end of the next 2-5 years the kids will be telling story after story. Don't judge just listen and recall your youth! Look into teen health fitness programs and think about a small investment in their freshman year towards being physically fit.
So they comb the newspapers and internet for jobs that they can maximize their hours of fun in the sun and stashing the cash for the nine months of freshman year. I for one like this group the most! Having two kids in college ourselves this is the one that we see as the most rewarding.
All too often unfortunately. Most seniors headed to lands far away like adventures in Hawaii with companies that make this an annual event. Sorry Oahu but Waikiki is not a fun place for adults in June. Although there are plenty of outdoor events to do there are far too few teen health fitness programs from what we saw this summer.
Now our children face the music. In the final dog days of summer approaching that magical first day of college some prepare to move out of the house and into a dorm or apartment (lucky ones). Not sure I would want my child in an apartment the first year but that’s me.
They plan, they perfect and the text all their friends that they are excited to be leaving the house for nine months of fun and studying (Ha!) in college. As the day approaches and turns into reality it sets in. They get apprehensive and second guess everything internally. This is the most stress they have been through in their lives but outwardly they try not to show it. Get them into a teen health fitness way of life!
Not me they say! Keep an eye out this summer as we exit July and head into August. Be there for your son or daughter and just listen to them. Give them guidance from your past experience on this topic if you can but don’t critique their expectations in a negative way. Frankly, we have seen too many children managed so tightly as they grow up through private or home schooling that they lack the social skills to manage adverse situations let alone the true diversity of life in general. If you can incorporate a little extra teen health fitness thinking this will go a long way in their exercise desires entering college.
In closing, allow your children to fail, they might just succeed.
Physical Fitness for Teens
Physical fitness for teens is as important today as academic or athletic preparedness. Obesity has taken such a toll on our society that we as a nation need to face the fact that in order to stop this trend we need to address teen fitness like never before. Teens today are faced with way too many choices. These choices come in all media types. The internet is open twenty four hours a day and has very little protection out of the box thus its open to all sorts of advertising to teens and younger.
The advertisers know this and exploit this on behalf of their clients who seek to grow their fortunes at the risk of selling items to teens that may not be in their best interest. All perfectly legal of course as we here at Planet Berry support free speech and commerce but the problem persists and we can fix this.
Teens today have many alternatives to their idle time. Those that choose can find a job fairly easily in their local community. At $7.50/hr wages are not that bad for teens. In fact, they have a lot of disposable cash which leads them to buy things on impulse rather than planning. Physical fitness should be one of those items.
We as parents and educators can help redirect our teens by incorporating a gym pass or perhaps a local walking or running club. Bike riding is by far one of the best alternatives for overall good health and less painful on the joints than jogging, running or even walking.
Many cities and towns across the country have begun thinking and planning around a more active teen life and less sedentary lapses. Aquatic centers are springing up all over the country and this is a great sign. We should vote with our hard earn tax dollars to keep this trend alive and well as it provides our teens with a great place to achieve a nice social environment with well supervised surroundings. The clubs and recreational centers will survive if we support them with memberships and attendance. So search the web in your local community and find a center that has the right programs, classes and hours of operation that your teen can pursue.
The summer is the time when idle space and time are at the highest which means the eating habits are even looser towards the wrong dietary choices. We are not saying that all teens are on sugar crazed focus today but look around and you will see the country has a problem and it’s more obvious with our teen population now than at any other time in recent memory.
All of this is reversible if we make an effort to supply our teens with good programs, services and positive reinforcement so that they can navigate on their own towards these rewarding choices. Assuming they have their iPod’s out of their deep ear space and can hear us! That was a deliberate throw in by the way. IPod’s are sweeping the globe. We all know it and we all have our own stories to tell. These devices are great for what they provide but they are also potential health problems primarily for our teens as they are the dominant owners of the technology.
These devices come with ear plugs that act as headphones or speakers. Our teens are not only playing these 10-12 hours a day in some cases but they are turning the volume up so high it is going to damage their hearing. Back in the 1970’s and 1980’s we feared the new speakers for our home stereos would be so loud that our youth would grow deaf in short order.
Well those speakers were not in your inner ear and I bet most of us have experienced some level of hearing loss anyway. Imagine 10 plus hours a day with that speaker blasting sunk in your inner ear! Good luck reversing this trend as most efforts fail as kids just don’t believe it can happen to them.
Our children are far more savvy than their parents when it comes to social networking online. If only they could find that teen health fitness network out there! The bottom line is they grew up real fast as compared to past generations and this is both good and bad.
The bad news is they rely less on the face to face interactions that are so important for life lessons as we mature. The good news is they have such vast potential career wise as to we can only imagine where they will be exiting their twenty something years. Ahh to be young again. We need to help them get back on focus with a real hard look at teen health fitness in general so they are better prepared to manage their bodies as they mature.
But we as parents are facing new social problems as they trust the person on the other end of the electrical current is really their age and female. There are predators out there that know how to lure our kids into their world and we need to educate ourselves and our children on best ways to manage online activity. Not an easy subject but many new online services and software packages are available to choose good ways to protect our children.
No matter how old they get they will forever remain our kids. Look soon for updates on great services as we are conducting research right now to provide on Planet Berry for all to review and get a leg up on leading edge providers of such services and solutions. For now, keep informed as best you can and talk to your kids about their internet usage. Age appropriate sites are very suspect when it comes to a 12-16 year old behind the wheel of their MAC or IBM PC...
Another savvy move is to send them teen health fitness text messages about this famous person or some other success story. Blend your messages towards the goal of a healthy teen lifestyle.
When To Say No
Generation ME is quickly entering the college ranks. They have very little desire to work and have grown up in a world of terror and hand-outs. Now that's a heck of an opening statement isn't it! Of course we are not talking about every teenager and within family groups you can clearly have those children that expect everything and those that do understand the value of earning it. Let's turn this into a positive focused on generation teen health fitness.
Peer pressure is probably the single biggest external challenge we face as parents. To hold your ground regardless of the families that try to buy their childrens attention and love is the only way to help them learn.
No hand outs is our motto. Our children don't receive cell phones at age 10 nor do they get one prior to having a drivers license. At that point we do believe a cell phone is a good resource for your child and by all means. Oh, did we say give it to them? No. In fact, show them a bill and have them come up with 3 months in advance to have the right to the phone. Turn off TXT messaging on their phone even if they have an unlimited family plan. It will make life easier for them in class!
We have listened to many family situations on the fundamentals of sending a child to college. Some parents opt to pay for it all and send their children to expensive private or highly ranked colleges.
Nothing wrong with that right! Wrong! Parents that have the money and parents that borrow to ahieve status for their child are not allowing their children to learn about the true value of an education. How many stories are out there about the 24 year old six year college senior now switching majors (again?). There are many examples. We have friends that have their children pay 1/3 of their total 4 year expenses and everything after that is on them. Nice incentive to keep focused.
Focus is the key. By linking the child to the expense you keep their minds on the prize. Now if you want to throw them an olive branch how about chipping in on a teen health fitness pass for a gym? Oh yes, the degree! The reason they are suppose to be in college. This story is not to say that all children want hand outs but we have a majority of families that want their children to have it better than they did. Why?
Because that is the way it has always been for generations. When we were growing up it was all about being a Doctor, Lawyer or perhaps a Professor. Today, the lawyers are viewed as evil the Doctors are being sued out of their savings by a a culture of ambulence chasing individuals and the insurance industry is unsure of what it can charge for.
So we believe that a good alternative is to have your child on the hook for their education. Have them take out a student loan. We decided to place an equal share (monthly) into a Fidelity Money Market account so that the money will earn interest.
However, there is a fixed amount and NO more. So if our children do extend their stay in college its on them not our retirement which isn't looking that safe anymore to begin with is it. Get your kids invested in themselves.
Take advantage of your States investment in local community colleges to reduce the overall expense of a four year education. The first two years are typically general education classes and not always focused on the eventual major which is typically started in year three.
Best of luck and if you want a complete look at how we did our kids just leave us a note at info@planetberries.com.
Please keep them focused on teen health fitness programs when they are away at school. Most if not all of the major schools have activities.
Summer Fun
Summer fun can be a lot of things to a lot of people. Families are on vacations and students are taking time off from their long trek through all those projects, homework and testing. Never ends by the way kids so don't get too happy after high school and college.
Try to combine family outings with planned teen health fitness events. Check out your local YMCA and Community recreational centers. They are great sources for programs to keep teens interested and fit!
This is also a time for boredom. When kids get bored they eat junk food. I know, they eat junk food all the time but in the summer we have the perfect storm. In families where both parents work they are alone typically for long periods of time and thus unsupervised. This can be a very difficult time for some to make good diet decisions. Summer is also the warmest time of year and thus all the ice cream goodies are plentiful. Try being a 14 year old on a ninety degree day and saying no to the ice cream Man! Not too long ago that was most of us reading this little story!
So, what can we do to help during the summer? How bout a check list of things that create teenage health fitness results. Think along the lines of physical things they can do like the following:
Landscape Projects
Grocery Store (walk)
Clean out the garage
Help Them Setup a business (There are plenty)
Summer Fun Projects (Puzzles and Painting)
Monthly Book Challenge
Tear out all those items in the kitchen and clean out the drawers
Trim the trees
Teen health fitness pass at the local gym
Setup a dog walking business with the neighbors
Wash the cars once a week
I didn't list one that we use but here goes, setup monthly math projects to keep their minds sharp as a razor. They love this one out of the gate! Actually, if they have any competitive spirit left after 9 long months of school this one get's them going but it's a tough early sell.
Teen health fitness focus can start slowly and gradually build up over time. This is much better for the body as well. Do you live close to your grocery store? Send the kids to the market. Have them walk versus the car. Get them thinking steps versus I will get to it later or combine the trips tomorrow. Tomorrow is too late. Get them moving and active. This will increase their metabolism significantly and it doesn't have to be challenging.
Stretch first to provide a smooth and easy glide into any new exercise program. Pay close attention to their hydration as well as this is key to any exercising program effort for the body to respond to it's needs as it adjusts to new found muscle mass and redistribution of fat cells into their more natural state which is spent fuel! Teen health fitness is the way and a focus on fitness as a discipline is the engine.
It does need to be fun. So mix it up. Think of things they need perhaps and combine those into the walk or jog. With a proper focus to teen health fitness you will see great improvement in areas like enthusiasm, being alert, desire and in overall respect. Yes, that ugly word they hate. They will learn to respect themselves when they see gradual positive improvements. Remember it's easy to gain weight it's a committment to losing it. Educate your kids today. Reach out for help and don't assume one web site or one trainer has all the answers. Step out of the box and build a fun and long lasting program for your kids to develop a teen health fitness lifestyle.
Why focus on walking you ask? Well it is the simplest form of true exercise. It won't bring drastic improvements like weight training, treadmill, stair steppers or similar more strenuous exercises but it is a foot in the door towards a begginning committment on a teen health fitness program. Getting them to agree to start and then staying focused and creating a repeatative approach will bring results.
From here you start working on developing more tasking aerobic training plans but only after they are truly consistent with their program. Set goals for them to achieve. Make them easy but challenging. Reaching a goal early stimulates the mind and body to work towards more challenging events and thus the teen health fitness desire will be greatly enhanced and better positioned for success.
Most important you must make a teen health fitness process exciting. Show them examples of the output from this committment. Sure, you can show them what could happen with obesity as a negative reinforcement but we believe they hear that all too often and it makes little impact sadly. Positive reinforcement and measurement is the way in our book.
A good long lasting teen health fitness approach will morph itself into an adult fitness program over time. They will have seen from their efforts and learned what they can do with very little endorsement once they get their initial results to their investment in their health and wellness.
Girls & Sports
There are many studies that show as girls enter and then exit their teens they gradually start decreasing their exercise and desires to participate in sports. This is exactly the wrong time for this to occur as the bodies ability to burn calories and stay ship shape is more challenged as you get older. If you have daughters in the early teens it's important to keep them involved with sports they are having fun with and stay focused on teen health fitenss programs.
Physical activity is the key. It doesn't have to be a formal sport like, baseball, basketball or soccer. It can be anything that gets the body moving! Teen health fitness is a process. It is a change in life that requires a committment long term. Thus in order for it to have staying power you have to enjoy it and be driven to it. Negative reinforcement is typically all these kids get. Teen health fitness is a complete environment for them to keep strong and healthy for years to come.
Motivate and support them to stay with the programs and do some research into the college of their choice (if they are going to college of course) and look into their sports programs. Most colleges have a ton of choices to stay active but its up to the kids to look into the programs and get involved. It's so good for them emotionally to have exercise and a fitness discipline that these are ways to help them stay close to the offerings.
Not going to college? Not a reason to stop either! Your local parks and recreation programs have numerous recreational sports activities with a good fitness discipline. They may have a nominal fee but they promote a good attitude and a fun environment for teens entering their twenties to stay connected to their health and wellness needs.
There is always a way if you put a little effort into your search! Enjoy and stay fit for life. Get your girls and boys involved in Teen Health Fitness early and it will extend into their adult years and provide many years of great satisfaction.
