In my opinion, the teams that should play are the teams that, after going through the season, are peeking at the end. That is how a Champion is crowned in any other sport. Teams that play lower division teams just to pad their record for the purpose of looking good at the end are doing the system a grave injustice. Playoff would absolutely weed out the pretenders.
I believe 16 teams would be the best format because it would reward the teams that had a good season, or a team that suffered costly early injuries but rebounded to a 8-3 record by winning 7 or 8 in a row. Besides, the revenue would be incredible.
I would also add, that no conference could have more than 3 teams per year.

The Present Format Does Not Always Crown the Best
BCS blew it big time last year. How do we all ban together on this and stop the BCS once and for all and get a true playoff. Seems to work in 21 days for Basketball!!!

Best Teams equal Champs in the BCS by: Arnie, Mission Viejo
Not sure peeking at the end is the best criteria. We need to look at the whole year. When did teams win and how. Did they play a Strong Schedule. What were the circumstances of their wins and losses. Did they have enough tough games away from their friendly home crowd?
LSU is a classic play at home school. They don't travel. When they do it's a patsy. Same with most of the Big 12 and SEC. It's right there in the record books.
