Allergic to Acai

by Emma
(Minnesota)

For the new year I decided I was going to start eating healthier and taking better care of myself. I started off the resolution by going on a diet consisting of mostly meat, veggies, and dairy (and a multivitamin) for the first two weeks, then i will slowly add in healthy fruit and whole grain products. And I will maintain that for a lifetime... (hopefully.)

However, I decided to try the acai juice, a couple ounces in the morning, each day for its powerful antioxidants. It was a mix of pomegranate juice and acai berries, i think it was one of those POM juices you find in the grocery store. I noticed that I got a few small rashy looking bumps on my arms, but did not put the two together because I have had very sensitive skin all of my life and I figured it was just a reaction to some lotion or the change in water (I was down in Rochester at the time I started, but live furthur North).

A week later I bought another product, the NAKED brand juices. One with pomegranate and acai also. I did the same thing every morning. By the second night of taking the product my wrists got inflamed with red itchy bumps that spread from my wrist up my arms in a matter of minutes. I got a little scared because I had never experienced such a strange flare-up. I took a shower and washed the area with gentle baby soap, put hydrocortisone all over it and laid down. I noticed that my breathing got shallow and I started to panic a little. I took an antihistamine and told my boyfriend to keep an eye on my through out the night. I was fine the next day. I did not drink the juice for a couple days and the rash cleared up. It was the only thing that was different that I had never tried before. My lotions were consistent, laundry detergent hadn't changed, and all of the other food I have eaten all my life.

I was confused as of why it only flared up at night when i had taken it in the morning. I consistently take a 24 hour allergy pill because I am prone to hives and eczema so I think that has something to do with the time frame.

When I was younger my parents said I was allergic to oranges. Now I am allergic to acai. Bummer!

Could it be the Acai Berry I am allergic to

by Kathy
(Reno, Nevada USA)

I am 52 years old and sent through chemotherapy 1-1/2 years ago. I have always been very chemical sensitive and had very bad allergies.

I began taking an Acai Blend months ago by my daughters request for the health benefits. I was quite
impressed, however it was not long before I broke out in a hive like rash on my stomach, chest, back and lower calf. If I had any form of sugar based sweets while taking the Acai Berry formulation it would make it worse. I
reached a point of unbelievable itching like poison
oak.

I went to a dermatologist and he suggested that the
combination of fruits might be a problem for me.

Has anyone heard of anything like this before? I
went off of it for 1 week and was doing much better, just started taking it again and now am itching and have bad rashes again.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thank you, Kathy

Two days ago I started taking acai pure body cleanse and yesterday I added the acai blast to my diet. This morning when I took my morning dose of the cleanse my arms started to swell up and I felt like I was going to faint. I do drink about 4 bottles of water a day and eat fruit and veg. but I have not noticed any cleansin as of yet.

I'm allergic to Acai

by Roberta Saum
(Gold Run, CA, USA)

I've never been allergic to anything before, and at 47 years old I got my first allergic reaction to something; the Acai Berry powder. I took it in a Xocai chocolate product, and also in capsule form which confirmed the allergy. I'm bummed, but I'll just have to get my antioxidants from other forms. My symptoms are tingling, itching, swollen, and chapped lips. This is ironic since many articles out there mention how the acai berry helps prevent other allergies.
