Walk Versus Drive

by Jeff Tennom
(Pittsburgh, PA)

Many of us live in areas whereby we could walk to the market. Not everyone but some. Just think if we all did like most do in Europe? What is that you ask? Well let me tell you. They don't rely on large thousand dollar appliances to store food for 1-2 weeks at a time. I find this funny in America because we have such a refrigerator ourselves and I swear we go to the supermarket 3 times a week anyway. But my point is that in Europe they may go to the market every day.

The difference is that they buy what they need for that day or perhaps two days. No large storage required and the food is fresh as can be. They do this for the following reasons. One, they don't own large kitchen appliances and the fuel cost to drive your car to the market is prohibited for them financially in some cases.

So, my fellow Americans, what do you think? Walk to the market every day. Get those 10,000 steps in the easy way and save fuel, slow down the emission pollution and feel good about yourself!

Go Steelers!

Calorie Burn From Walking
by: Harold

I hear a lot of chatter about calories burned while walking can equal that of running. I find this hard to believe as the energy expelled to run is far greater than that of walking. Now if the walking were up hill or on a tread climber like the Bowflex T5000 then perhaps an equal billing here. But head to head running should burn more calories overall when compared to walking.

Im assuming the same duration and incline comparisons. Thoughts from the experts?

Walking Is In
by: Simone in Chicago

Walking for fitness and the heatlh of our planet is a great idea. For those of us living in cities like Chicago we have a big advantage over most cities as we can use mass transit to help get us over long hauls normally requiring a car. Thus we can leave the car at home. We also tend to have one less car than families in cities like Los Angeles where the car is so critical to commerce.
